i've pondered this when working on history, looking at peoples motivations....ultimately, aren't all acts consciously carried out to benefit you, ie making you feel good

You can help someone out without it helping you in any way. In fact I've run myself into the ground in order to help people.
So, yes.
I think of it as the 'right' thing to do, not necessarily in terms of good or bad. I find thats a more practical approach to helping

do you not feel good for your deeds?
and if so, surely that doesn't constitute a selfless act

id say the only selfless act would be giving your life for another, because you cant exactly feel good about doing something like that, after you've done it can you? well maybe by some people's religions you can but im not religious so...

Stories of Buddah are full of good deeds of the type you mentioned. Here is one, I don't remember it exactly, but the feeling will be the same anyway:
One day while Buddah was walking, he came upon a starving Lioness and her small Lion. Being that there was no other food for miles, the Lioness was confronted with decision of eating her small Lion to stay alive, or allowing her small Lion to eat herself in order for him to live; however, by doing the latter, the small Lion would surely die for he was yet too small to defend himself in the wild. Buddah knew right away what he must do. He sacrificed himself in order to feed both the Lioness and her small Lion, allowing them both to live until they reached a more bountiful place where food was plenty.
That was quite a completely selfless act.

yeah but he wouldn't do it if it didn't make him happy
would he do that if it made him unhappy?

"would he do that if it made him unhappy?"
well, thats the logic behind selfless acts, you do it without regard to your own well being, so who knows? :)

say I had someone a was truly in love with and would do ANYTHING for her....then she was going to die, but somehow I could give my life for her....wouldn't I be doing it ultimately to make me happy because she can stay alive?

Any gene which has a tendency to replicate itself more relative to competing alleles (selfishness) will become more common. The initial illusion of altruism seems to always be selfishness in disguise. ex. a mother sacrificing milk from her own body to feed her baby has the selfish act of replicating her genes since the baby carries 1/2 of her genes. Creatures are altruistic to one another based on their genetic relationship in order to selfishly pass on their own genes. Organisms are merely evolved defensive outer coverings for the genes.
Replication is the cause of everything living.
