America is getting worse

Its just in the news that those poor people are trapped in
that mine in Pennsylvania. I understand the shock and
horror that must have caused to fellow family members and
friends when that first leaked out. But here America is
with computer generated diagrams that actually move around
pointing and showing how the workers are going to get them
out. Thats not so bad. But i just saw a 'time line' of
what happened like

at 1:00 pm: workers are getting ready to dig

at 4:00 pm: workers have begun finalizing plans to dig

at 8:00 pm: workers start digging

at 9:00 pm: workers take a break

I mean come on! lets not forget to include:

MINE DISASTER 2002!

in big huge flourescent green letters. im sorry
America...but really...lets calm down on all this. its
devestating new for sure...and my condolences go out...but
when you hover over something like this for hours on end
with computer graphics and time lines and unnecessary
interviews with 1000 journalists just talking to one police
officer...you gotta say..hey guys...calm down. I think its
just weird...you know.

I was just thinking to myself on what real journalism is to
me...which is people that go out and get the news and put it
down with their English skillz. Back 50 years they didn't
need all this fancy stuff...news was hardcore! Now i would
even call what these guys do on CNN journalism. its like
Flash Journalism. Darn it.

if you could only understand the frustration many aviation
enthusists like myself feel when the media completely
botches any stories about aviation.

Same things you are feeling now. I don't see as much
sensationalism anymore though, which is nice. Course, I
stopped watching the news, so pick your poison.

I could count on my fist the number of times the media has
gotten aircraft stories remotely correct.......sigh

errrrr

the mass media are businesses..... their main goal is to
make money

as long as they exist to make a profit, content will be
whatever sells, not whats important or resposible or
intelligent
ESPECIALLY not intelligent, lol

(but then: important to who? well thats a whole other story
i guess..)

i think AMinal nailed it.

Sex sells, so we get sex on tv. Sensationalism sells, so we
get horrid details to fill a page to push one more unit.
(it's all about pushing units)

but yeah. Aminal, dead on

Aminal: then Autechre should start doing news. they could
call it "Intelligent News Broadcasting" or INB

Here's another The Onion article in its entirety. I thought
this thread would be appropriate for it considering the
topic. its not so much funny as true. a sick kinda true.

Missing White Girl Drives Missing Black Girl From Headlines

CORVALLIS, OR— Becky Van Gelder, an 11-year-old white girl
from Corvallis, was abducted from her home Monday, bumping
10-year-old Chicago black girl Tyesha Washington from the
nation's newspaper headlines. "When a child is harmed, we
all lose a small piece of our collective innocence," said
USA Today managing editor Donna McCutcheon, who moved the
Washington abduction to page 23A to make room for Van Gelder
on the cover. "Especially when it's a young blonde girl like
Becky."

that's true? I thought the Onion was all joke news based
around the idea of political hyperbole/farce...?

the media goes out of the way to seem like its doing a great
true story here... or something. I dont know, its really
hard to explain - as if we as a society need a new word to
describe something like this, because now human nature has
evolved to something like this... sharks.

offline Amonbrune from Vancouver (Canada) on 2002-07-26 07:31 [#00325304]
Points: 7327 Status: Addict

no no no...its fake..im just saying it really hits the mark
on what seems to happen with the media. i have doubt
something like that COULD happen. notice how the girl that
took over the other girl was 'white' and 'blonde'... notice
anything? its fake yeah...but somehow points fingers
really well.

sharks is a good word. everyone is out biting the other.
the smell of money turns people into crazed lunatics.

fucking capitolism...if we all weren't driven by the all
mighty dollar this world would be a better place.

i propose a system like the venus project (not sure if
that's the name)...someone started a thread about it here a
bit ago.

24 hour live coverage of an ant crossing the road, with new
matrix style 360 degree camera angles..... interviews with
fellow ants will then proceed though the following week
followed by a step by stem synopse and detailed timeline.
