i'd advise to wear earplugs, man ive been to raves and concerts and not been able to hear for days afterwards. i get headaches with the tinnitus thing aswell. i never thought earplugs changed the sound much, trust me youll be able to hear thru them. |

You're going to be so fucking sorry if you ever have to deal with tinnitus. They say that people don't that don't have it, don't understand what it's like until they experience it. I know that sounds like a 'no shit' kind of thing, but it's definitely true. See, the thing is, that the effets of tinnitus caused by long time exposure to loud noises, can be life long. Now I know you've experienced a ringing in your ears before from something, I'm sure -- almost everyone has at some point. But if you can, imagine hearing or perceiving that for the rest of your life. Not so cool. Wear earplugs. I do ALL of the time I've played in a band for 2 1/2 years and I've worn earplugs every time we practiced or had a show. A couple of months ago I had a hearing test to see how things were after wearing protection al those times, and my hearing was normal. However, the guitar player has never worn earplugs, so he suffers from slight noise induced hearing loss, so it definitely pays to wear them. You will hear everything just fine. Just like your ears adapt to the loudness of it without the earplugs, they will adapt to the way things sound through the earplugs, and you will be happier in the long run, if you love music. Well, if you value your sense of hearing at all. |

yeah the earplugs i have DO influence the sound. i wear them while playing my electric guitar, the sound is blurred, not accurateat all. but yeah it beats getting deafer and deafer, i guess |

you can buy high quality ear plugs, that are custom made to fit your ear, and they filter the level equally, so its just like a turned down volume... no change in sound quality about 100 bucks though... but great investments for musicians im getting some soon |

Well of course they're going to blur the sound, that's how they protect your hearing. Cuts out the dB levels. You're smart for wearing them though. |

Yeah, I'm going to get some of those. The lady I talked to qouted me a $370 though, which is insane. I guess I'll try to look around for something better, price-wise. Right now I wear one of those isolation headsets, the kind the you see people on gun ranges wearing. I've seen lots of musicians wear them. They REALLY cut down the volume. |

yeah i heard about those. mine cost me about 10 dollars and they suck. what about discmen? i mean, hard to protect your ears when you're sitting on a bus and you want to listen to music, isn't it? |

I live in boston, and they are made at North Eastern University... so i was told... yeah... discmen... that can be hard... i just try to keep it as soft as i can, but loud enough to hear everything except when im writting music... i pump up the volume for my headphones, cause I want to hear every detail... |

Yeah, discmans are one of the main causes for tinnitus, but I think that's only if you like, listen to it daily at loud volumes. Plus I know the feeling. I rode a city transit bus to and from school everyday, because my car doesn't have brakes at the moment (goddammit) and I listen to headphones at least 2 or 3 days a week on that thing. Otherwise, I'd get so bored. |

They say to adjust the volume until it is at a comfortable level and does not distort. That's what they say in the manuals anyhow. I know, I was like "What the fuck? Do they do your fucking taxes too?!" when she told me how much they costed, but I'm going to look around a bit more. |

yeah i ride the bus at least three times a week, back and forth, (when i'm not holidaying, that is), and i bet it doesn't do my ears any good. it's an hours drive, though. music is unmissable |

they say everyone who suffers from it reacts differently to tinnitus. Some people can live with it just fine, other people can't take the constant noise in their head at all, and slowly go insane... I got a ringing in my ear after a concert, a couple of months back. It scared me to death :-s I was really glad when the sound eventually went away (in a couple of weeks time), and the thought of having to live with with that noise for the rest of your life doesn't seem very appealing... never a moment of silence... always that irritating sound. It reminded me of rushing water... like i was constantly standing in the shower. (i bought earplugs the next day... not really professional ones i think (they cost 25 euros). But the guy behind the counter said they'd be fine if i just went to a concert every now and then). |

It definitely depends on the person. If you're a musician or a music lover, dealing with it could be rather tough. But yeah, I would imagine some people just don't even pay it any attention. |

ive had the ringing for years now. the worst moments are when there's no sound at all, then i actually notice the it. i fancy i'll go made one day :) my hearing isn't impaired at all, however. i hear way better than anyone i know. maybe that's because i'm trying to hang on to it :( :) |

and apparently, it has actually driven some people to suicide :-o Maybe i would rather be altogether deaf than have permanent tinnitus. I mean I'm glad i don't have to choose ;-) But still. It was so annoying when i was trying to get to sleep, and all i could here was that sound. It seems to get louder as you focus on it.. And when you try to block it out... you can't help but focus on it anyway. |

I remember when I was little (7 or 8) I used to hear ringing when it was very quiet. Usually at night as I was going off to sleep. |

Yeah, doctors will suggest that you go somewhere where there's a low level of ambience or create some, to sort of mask the ringing. I've heard of some people turning on the radio to static to get to sleep at night. |

btw, i can't remember when it started, but i don't think it had anything to do with loud music. i had a terrible ear ache after my first intercontinental flight, i think that's what caused it. |

well didn't you ever go to a doctor with it? If it's not from loud music, it might be something else instead of tinnitus. I think there is no cure for tinnitus, but if your ear is damaged in some other way, they might be able to fix it. Unless you find the ringing so soothing you don't wanna miss it ofcourse ;-) Actually "hardcore obelisk" reminds me a little of that sound aswell... only less annoying and more beautiful :-) |

i went to a doctor last year, had my ears cleansed (or what's it called in english), but she said it can't be helped. about the plane, that's just my own little theory :) |
