I've used fruityloops for close to a year now and feel I am
ready to progress to something more complex. Can anyone
recommend a good follow up piece of software, preferably one
that would support a midi keyboard and controller with
multiple midi channels simultaneously and that supports VST
plugins?

Good to see you again Ceri!!!

Have you tried Reason 1.0 already? To use it you need to
download the soundbank CD first (= approximately 500 MB).
Perhaps it could be a little difficult now that you don't
have broadband internet anymore. Reason is powerful and
looks very slick. Try it!

Then there's also Buzz Advanced. Very powerful, but
unintuitive and difficult to learn.

For MIDI purposes only you can use Logic Audio
(Silver/Gold/Platinum). I use version 4.7 but you can try to
get the latest one. Doesn't support VST plugins as far as I
know though.

Ceri...I'll stick Cubase & whatever else I've got on a CD as
promised by email earlier....will try and get this done this
weekend coming as I'm more or less free...my partner is off
to Bristol (hopefully not to f*** you ;)...

best bet I reckon is either Logic, Cubase VST or
Reason....try em all and see what suits...

I've looked at the Reason demo, but it crashes as soon as I
close a window in it on my PC - shame as I really liked the
look of it, esp. being able to link rebirth into it...

I like the look of recycle from the demo, but that seems
more like a sampler program than a music creation one, is
that right?

Ex:

I'll have to get a good dedicated midi program now I have a
midi keyboard, thanks for the heads up.

Jand:

"my partner is off
to Bristol (hopefully not to f*** you ;)... "

Tapping you for music software whilst seducing your partner?
That sort of thing only happens in Channel 5 films ;)
I'm down in Cardiff this weekend anyhoo :)

haha!!..

yeah, Recycle is just for cutting up breakbeats into
individual hits and segments, so you can re-order....the key
to jungle/dnb and all that break-fuckery...

but cool to do same with other stuff as well...like vocals,
basslines etc....

Yeah, I thought recycle would be cool to nick "instrument"
noises from other tracks as well as for remixes. Didn't Rich
say he used recycle in an interview?

Do you make music Jand? Is there any available for DL (not
that I can at the moment...)?

I used to, mate...but a long time ago before PCs were 1/1000
as good as they are now...

I would've killed for half the facilities of Fruityloops
when I was doing stuff...

Nowadays I have the occasional fuck around but that's about
as far as it goes...

kinda lost my creative juices musically but I've got some
visual stuff I'm working on that should be cool when I get
it finished...but that's a long way off as it's fiddly stuff
& finding time when you share a house with someone can be a
pain...

I'm kinda looking forward to having the weekend to myself
for a change...

It's to the South - out in the countryside. A very nice
area. I live in Clifton, Bristol though...

I'll let you know when I'm in Bristol next..... we could get
a posse together to rape and pillage women and small
villages (Respectivly of course).
