ok, people here have been listening to Gantz Graf for like the past month at least, and its not due till August. And Squarepusher too... and its not even out till september...
this is madness...
my question is... why is it out there? Do you think that the labels intentionally leak it on the net, so word wil spread (although they deny it and then blame mp3s for killin record sales) or do you think that its some punk ass that has access to the new material, and puts it on the net... or the artist themselves, by thier own free will?
But i mean, how many people really have access to it before its released?
If i released a cd, id want to have some mystery to it... id make sure no one could leak it on the net... so the cd release date would be a bigger event...
i dunno... just some thoughts im throwing around at 5:40 am

it's gets on the internet from promo copies that are sent to radio stations and record companies and special people.
or at least that's my understanding. i may be wrong.

Yeah, and the promo material has very little or no cover art.

Maybe leaked mp3's increase exposure, not hurting cd sales at all. That'd be my guess, plus a while back there was some post about how the decline in cd sales could be accounted for the general economic environment not necessarily the introduction of the mp3 format?

yeah, I do wonder whether it ruins the excitement sometimes...but I think they just accept now that it's gonna be leaked onto the net and in a way, it does build up a buzz for a record...& i kinda suspect some of the leaks are internal to the label anyway be that artists themselves or label staff...
I still get excited over releases even if I've already got em, GG I've had for ages (poster, video & Mp3s) but I'll still be buying it on day 1 (or before if pos:)...for the artwork, better quality & to support the artist/label...
same goes for anything else I've had before the actual release date...I think that's true for anyone who's into this sort of stuff...
(and for a golden example of leaking check Radioheads Kid A...certainly didn't seem to do that any harm and that's more or less a mainstream release...I believe even RH themselves were very pleased at the way the leaks built up a buzz around the record...)...

they must have sent out gantz graf promos very early if they've already been on the net for ages. whats the reasoning behind that?

I think WARP were intending to release GG a while back...delayed and then was set for July...
Delayed again to Aug 5th...
Think it might have been problems with getting the DVD together but not 100% sure...the poster I've got is from NOV2001 and that's a still from the GG vid so it must have been done for a while...
