I think this is a more resonable comparison... Endtroducing
and MHTRTC are very similar in some ways, and listening to
The Private Press it sounds like DJ Shadow's Geogaddi to his
Endtroducing if you get what I mean...

Head has caved in, thanks Funkmaster..that's tough, i mean
they're both good for completely different reasons, the feel
in their music is worlds apart, but they still evoke strong
emotions in their own ways..I honestly can't answer this,
i've been a shadow fan longer, but boards has kinda been
something like nothing else in the musical world for me

Er, i'll go with boards of canada, based on the fact that i
think geogaddi was stronger than private press as an album,
so it gives them a slight edge

On this one my good phriend,I personally have to go with
Boards of Canada....I like their creativeness in their
music,of course,not that DjShadow isn't,because he's very
creative, but just the way is delivered....BoC!!!!!!!

why not both? it's dangerous to keep comparing to see which
you like better cos you end up appreciating the music less,
thinking "oh this isn't as good as.."

Dont get me wrong. they are both really good in their own
ways.

But I vote for Dj Shadow, because he's a badass muthafucking
dj.

(only Mixmaster and Q-bert rival his scratching techniques)

the shadowy dj is awesome. but all of his work just cannot
amount to all that boc have done. im talking even
pre-mhtrtc. so although df shadow is great, boc is superior
musically.

to some stuff from MHTRTC driving back from the gym last
night. Very relaxing.

shadow..........boring. Heard "private press" a few times in
diff situations.....playing quake, chatting &100%
attentiveness. Nothing new there......his street sounds are
tired, the letter home is too fucking gimmicky and
well...it's old. Comparing him to BoC is silly (i'm i not
getting something here or what?)
.......5 letters: "U.N.K.L.E"...nuff said.
(cept that i will give it another spin based on this BoC
comparison thing)

DJ Shadow represents all that is wrong with turntabilism
hip-hop. His music has no soul. It's been completly
stripped by repetitive melodies. You can hear a track of
his once, have it memorized and never have to hear it again.
Hence, 'Entroducing' is good the first time. After a few
listens the realization sets in that the album is boring and
has little replay value because it is so damned predictable.
Like I said, it's got no soul because the tracks all sound
like a sequence.

I'm going with the Shadow here. Entroducing is way to hard
to top and for the fact The Private Press is a damn good
release. The second half of Blood on the Motoway should
blow anyone away.

well, if it's boring after the first listen why is
Endtroducing still listened to today by loads of people, is
still influential, and is still selling? Because what you
said is just your opinion... personally I think DJ Shadow's
music is almost overflowing with soul... it's amazing!!

offline GolgiApp from Seattle (United States) on 2002-07-06 20:59 [#00299574]

>Because what you
said is just your opinion... <
Of Course it's my opinion, but it is shared by more than you
think. I'm pretty involved in the hip-hop scene here in
Seattle. I know alot of MC's and Producers. Not a single
one of them is down with DJ Shadow. 'Building Steam with a
Grain of Salt' and 'Stem/Long Stem' seem, at first, like
classic tunes. Then after a few listens comes the
realization that both are made of 5 or 6 loops that don't
change very much. Perhaps his new one is better, I haven't
heard it. I have heard 'Entroducing' and 'Preemptive
Strike' aplenty, even seen him live. I also don't like how
the 'Entroducing' album cover fronts that he is Black. I
think the genius tag gets thrown around way too easily.
I've made alot of nice cuts using nothing, but samples from
unique and odd sources. Perhaps it's talent. I wouldn't
call it genius nor do I think would he.

>Endtroducing still listened to today by loads of people, is

still influential, and is still selling<

Korn and Limp Bizkit are listened to today by loads of
people, influenced many and are still selling. Genius?

Check out
'Carboot Soul', by 'Nightmares on Wax'. He uses similar
techniques as DJ Shadow. I feel, to much greater affect.

Keep on rockin'

since when is dj shadow self-referential? He does that on
the new album with "Walkie talkie" but that seems more like
a joke than anything..there are a lot of other dj's out
there that ride on their own ego far more

yeah, i think that whole 'im a bad motherfucking dj' thing
is sort of poking fun at all the cocky self referential
djs..

...and how does the cover of endtroducing 'front that he's
black'? its a picture of a record store...a still from the
midnight in a perfect world video actually... in which two
people are looking through records..one of them is
black...where is the implication that this is dj shadow?

im not trying to cause trouble golgiapp...you gave valid
reasons for not liking dj shadow..which i respect....except
for the album cover one..

dj shadow refers to his desire to stay in the shadows, and
not be all "look at me look at me".

the bad motha fucking dj is taking the piss out of cocky
djs.

I haven't notice much self-referential bits in tracks by DJ
Shadow. Someone else brought it up. I was commenting on
self-referential tendencies in general.

did absolutly nothing for me.

Also. I got 'Entroducing' based on a nice review around the
time it came out. The review made no reference to his race.
The CD has a picture of a black guy on the front and back
of the album. I thought it was the same black guy, more
specifically DJ Shadow himself. Whether he was frontin' on
race or not, I don't really care. It does create the
illusion, if you don't know he's white, that he is black.
Kinda uncool in hip-hop circles.

if never created that illusion with me... I just assumed it
was a innocent picture taken at a used record store
somewhere... and a couple black guys just happened to be
there... and, if you look at the front and back, it's one
picture, but just folded together... so how can the same
person be in two places on one picture?

and there is also a picture of a white guy on the cover, so
why would you suddenly think that DJ Shadow was making the
illusion of being black? I don't want you to think I'm mad
now cause I'm not, but I just don't see how he was making
the illusion of being black...

>but just folded together... so how can the same
person be in two places on one picture?<

You don't know that if you're looking at it on the store
shelf. Some hip hop dudes convinced me that if you're
looking to buy a dj's album and you've got dozens to choose
from. You are more likely, if you're a hip-hop kid, to buy
an album by a brother than a white guy. So puttin' Shadow's
big white face on the album cover could have been a bad
business decision. It was probably an innocent move, but he
should have been aware that some people might not think it's
too cool. This is all old sh*t, though. To his credit,
other than this instance, I've never seen him try to gain
any unearned street cred and appear as anything other than a
white dude in a goofy hat.

yeah ok, I understand what you're saying... I guess the
times are a bit different now then in 96... now it seems
that hip-hop is more available to both black and white
people... I do remember back around then it seemed that
hip-hop was exclusively black...

>>and there is also a picture of a white guy on the cover,
so
why would you suddenly think that DJ Shadow was making the

<<

Nor do I want anyone to think that Shadow's success keeps me
up at nights. Hopefully he serves as a spring board for
people to check out other non-mainstream hip-hop. His
shout-outs in the 'Entroducing' linear notes are a good
start.

Also, I think the other dude on the cover is Asian. He's
out of focus. The black guy is in the foreground and in
focus holding records. I thought that was Shadow, I know
others who made the same mistake.

Cheers,
