what do you guys think of me buying a 933 power mac g4 with 7300rpm second drive and pro-tools digi 001?????? do you think that this is money well spent? i do have a lot of friends with macs so cracked software isnt a problem! anyway what do you guys think pc / mac whats the difference i hope to have both systems eventualy, also whats the average lifespan of a mac or pc? |

Macs carry a premium I'm not sure is warrented. For the same price as a basic Mac you could have an ass-kicking PC. It's getting more and more difficult to justify getting a Mac IMO, unless you're a Logic user, heh. |

Macs run twice as fast as PCs at equal Mhz but are also twice as expensive so they're equal. Both have great programs and are more than suitable for audiotasks. |

Hahaha! We're not dealing with P75s running WinME anymore. My PC gets left one more or less 24/7 amd hasn't crashed for as long as I can remember. I'm not trying to start a Mac vs PC flame war for fucks sake. I'm trying to say I don't think the Mac vs PC debate is quite as cut and dry as it's been in the past. So what if Macs can surpass a PC's performance at equal clock speeds. I'll have a PC with a 2.5GHz processor please... Mac's are very expensive. If you've got the money, sure - go ahead and buy yourself a fancy looking computer. |

Get a PC, if you set it up right and know what youre doing it will crash LESS than a mac. I had a G4 733 and while it was pretty it just didnt have enough juice to run a lot of plugins and softsynths at once. If youre using any VSTis, and effects, definitely get a pc. |

now im running an athlon XP2000 and songs in cubase that were eating %80 of the CPU never cross %10 on the athlon. I sold the mac to buy the athlon a year after I bought it, never looked back. |

If youre getting a desktop get a PC. If you're getting a laptop its a harder descision, you cant really go wrong with mac laptops, but if you do your research properly you can probably get more for your dollar on a PC. |

what software are you going to be using exactly? For example reaktor for mac is utter shite, while for PC it is out of this world. I couldnt understand what all the fuss was about reaktor while I had it on my mac, now on my PC I hardly touch any other softsynths. |

Mostly will be ACID,for music editing and programming,plus editing some loops,Reason v2,mostly for sampling and sequencing plus some programming too and for practicing my virtual djing,Traktor......That is it for now plus other programs for easy music making matters or some basic rythms,maybe FruityLoops,dont know yet......=) |

you can only open one instance as a VSTi, which isnt even fully integrated, you have to have the standalone reaktor open in the background. Using it as an effect within cubase is extremely flakey and prone to crashing the computer. Theres just generally a feel of shakyness to the whole thing, I was always worried it would collapse. Now on PC I dont even think twice about having 4 instances open and using effects all the time. Its never crashed once on me sincee ive been on PC. |

I had no idea Reaktor was so crappy on Mac. So you bought Reaktor for Mac and PC, or does it come on both formats on one CD? Wasn't Mac Reaktor a couple of versions behind PC too? |

People always cite design programs as the reason to get a mac. As far as I know they don't have Autocad or Painter on them. And all the good CGI software is Sun/PC format. All the good mac stuff is ported to pc anyway, plus you can upgrade PCs a lot more easily and do far more with them. PCs are far better for games and compatibility. In my experience, mac users (aside from programmers) seem to be: girls/non technical bods/hippies. |

I program on my PC but to be honest for everyday tasks the Mac just performs better. Mac have always had the advantage that they design the HArd and software. |

I have noticed recently that there is alot of mac envy where I work after OSX came out. All the nerds are giving it props. I went to a seminar all about it and all the UNIX guys where *almost* won over. Only time will tell there. For me computers should be usable with very little practice. Macs are just that. I like my PC for programming and the like but OSX now offers JAva and C IDEs as standard so I soon might ditch the old PC. PCs are ugly as fuck to boot. |

I think you have hit the nail on the head. I have been debating about what computer to buy for myself. And I have decided to get a Mac and run virtual PC on it. Unfortunately there isn't the opposite of this for a PC. For programmign etc I will use the PC and for everyday tasks the MAc will happily be my companion. |

Absolutely, I've had it for 6 days and I'm really happy about it. Here's the thing, I think that its about equal in power to like the 2.0+ gigs p4 notebooks. But those things with the combo drive (CDRW+DVD) included are 8+ pounds 2.5 inches. The Powerbook is 5.4 pounds, 1 inch, with the same sized screen. I have a feeling in 6 months or so they will have 5 pound pc notebooks capable of the 800mhz powerbook. But that's a way off. Plus macs are just beautiful. I'm learning to love the OS (I don't like it as much as windows yet, probably because I'm not used to it.) Warcraft III runs beautifully on it, and everything just works. I plugged in my digital video camera, beep! it works. No drivers, no b.s. Basically its a self contained world, what you are sacraficing is third party software, but in that self contained world, mac assumes they have or make everything you need, but so far...they're right. |

My only real complaint at this point is file sharing, limewire is sucking and I don't really have any good connections for the third party software. If you are in the know though, I'm sure you can overcome that, I'm sure I will soon. Its annoying though, not to even have adobe photoshop yet. |

And if you get the G4 tower, shell out the extra $700 for the dual 1 gig processor! I've heard universally that its worth it (plus you get 20 extra gigs of HD, and more importantly double the ram). |
