[hi-fi] Headphones

I recently bought a used Cayin cdt-15a tube HDCD player at
a very reasonable price. I also bought an Argon HA-1
headphone amp to use with my Denon AH-D1001 headphones.
Being a superb headset for my iPod, the D1001 falls way
short with my Cayin/Argon system. It needs a better headset.

So, I've searched around a bit and decided to get either an
AKG K-701 or a Sennheiser HD 650. They cost exactly the same
where I'm bying from and there's a 25% discount these days,
so I need to make a desicion pretty fast.

I listen to a lot of different types of music, electronic,
60's jazz, minimal ambient, drones, noise, lofi and pop, so
the set needs to be an all-rounder. I'm more into details
than bass-power.

So, what should I get k701 or hd650?

ive got a pair of sennheiser ie7 in-ear monitors which are
absolutely sublime, particularly the bass, and i've heard
most sennheisers are similar.

I have a pair of AKG K-601

and they're really good. not so very bassy. but very clear
sounding.

I also have some in ear senheisers and those have good bass
response. but not too much.

I think either of the two you want are good.

i use the hd 650, and they sound really good with everything
i listen to (basically the same as your list). i can't give
a comparsion with the k701, since i haven't tried them, but
i'm pleased with mine.

re: AKGs...i can get them at quite a discount (employee
discount) .. but looks like the highest models offered are
the K242HD and the K272HD. anyone have any opinions on
these models? they are only about a $10 difference between
the two (!!) so i guess it comes down to whether i want open
or closed cans.

I've never heard the AKG K-701 but I know they're fantastic
headphones and have quite a following.

I used to use HD 650's for about 7 years and they are really
lovely. Great detail (if a little laid back) and the
smoothest phones i've ever heard. They make everything
really nice and are also incredibly comfy - even more so
than my HD 800's!

Just be aware that the 650's (and probably the K-701's) need
a decent amp to power them, as they're 300 ohms and a basic
ipod amp probably won't cut it.

I'm going for the AKG K-701. After googling my way through
volumes of various forum posts and reviews I've seen a lot
of happy hd650-to-k701 converts.

brisk: The Argon HA-1 is a decent amp, apparently only
produced for the Scandinavian market: LAZY_specs and review

So, I'll have them early next week I guess. :D

I found some pink noise to burn them in with - supposedly
that speeds up and generally improves the burn-in process.
I'm testing it right now with my Denon set. I don't know,
I'm not really a hi-fi geek.

I received my K 701's today. OMG! They sound great straight
out of the box, even though they are known to have an
extremely long burn-in time (200h). I'm running music
through it today but I will definitely turn to this site for
other burn-in tools later: http://www.burninwave.com/

I just listened to "Evolution" (Blue Note 1963) by Grachan
Moncur III and was blown away by the clear but yet warm
sound from my new phones. Yep, I guess I made the right
decision this time *relief*

I payed 2600 Norwegian Krones = 275 £ = 317 € = 444 $

That might seem much, but the NOK is strong at the moment so
it really is a bargain from where I'm standing. I think I
saved about a 1000 NOK (25%) buying them from
here.

Congrats on the purchase! The 701s are amazing headphones.

Now you need an amp. May I suggest something from
Singlepower? I've heard great things about combining those
headphones with the Meier Corda Aria...

Wow. That's a shame! I had a singlepower amp for a while,
and it sounded beautiful. Good thing mine never blew up on
me...
