are there any on the xltronic massage board?
if so, i don't know anyone who's using linux irl... so i'm asking the mighty xltronic.com/mb, k?
i basically want to have a simple, hassle free, linux install on a usb flash drive for one single task: running Processing apps. Which means there have to be drivers for built in hardware, usb etc, just really basic stuff, and a way for me to launch and terminate apps. no e-mail client, browser or such is needed.
is this even possible with a macbook pro?

There's a tool called refit that lets you multi boot Linux and OSX. Haven't tried it yet but the guy at the Apple store recommended it.
Is Processing pretty awful on OSX? I've installed it but haven't played with it much.

thanks...
no it's pretty decent, except there's this pretty nifty video library i want to use that is based on something called gstreamer which is a total bitch to install on OS X (i gave up)... but apparently works fine on Linux/Windows.
and my hard drive is kinda full, so no Windows.

I saw the instructions for OSX - they don't look that bad - was everything broken? And every step required ten troubleshooting steps that each required ten other troubleshooting steps? :D

I use linux at work, I really like how everything is kind of just built in. It's VM'd on a vista machine. I like ubuntu, fedora seems to run better. It's not nearly as stable as everyone says, I think that might be gnomes fault though. I like the idea, and it's really nice to have the option to use it. Would really like to see better stability with it, they keep adding all this crap to gnome that isn't focusing on making the experience smooth and fast (processing wise). When it's running dedicated install on my laptop it's kind of romantic for a bit but eventually I need to use stuff windows does better. My verdict is have both honestly, one is really good for programming, servers, etc the other is really good for mainstream applications and peripherals.

Try puppy linux. Boots off a USB stick and loads everything onto a RAMdisc, so is speedy. Writes the whole RAMdisc back to USB drive so you can put it in another machine and carry on from exactly where you left it.
There is a package manager of sorts, I don't know if it has what you want, but you can always compile from source (not that scary).
Other ones which I've not tried, but are based on debian (so you can probably use the vast number of .deb packages) are:

i am currently using avlinux on my netbook in dual boot with normal windows xp sp3. works like a charm from the very beginning (wchich, i heard, is something difficult to achieve with linux). it has a lot of stuff preinstalled is easy to use and the forum community is quick and helpful. you might wanna try that out.
