http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/dec/26/plane-bomb-plot -detroit
A British student from Nigeria who claimed to be an agent for al-Qaida tried to blow up a Northwest Airlines plane yesterday as it was preparing to land in Detroit.
He was overpowered by passengers and crew members who smelled smoke and heard what sounded like firecrackers, federal officials said.
Police identified the suspect as Umar Farouk Abdul Mutallab, 23. It is understood he is an engineering student at University College London.
One official said the man claimed to have been instructed by al-Qaida to detonate the plane over US soil.
Flight 253 with 278 passengers and 11 crew members aboard was about 20 minutes from landing at the airport when passengers heard popping noises, witnesses said.
At least one person climbed over others and jumped on the man. Shortly afterward, the arrested man was taken to the front of the plane with his trousers cut off and his legs burned, a passenger said. Police said the burns indicated the explosive was strapped to his legs.
President Barack Obama, who is on holiday in Hawaii, has been informed of the situation and is monitoring events.
One US intelligence official said the explosive device was a mix of powder and liquid. It failed when the passenger tried to detonate it.
"It sounded like a firecracker in a pillowcase," said Peter Smith, a traveller from the Netherlands. "First there was a pop, and then [there] was smoke."
Smith said a passenger sitting opposite the man climbed over people, went across the aisle and tried to restrain the man. Syed Jafri, another passenger, said he saw a glow and smelled smoke. Then, he said, "a young man behind me jumped on him."
"Next thing you know, there was a lot of panic," said Jafri. The White House said it believed it was an attempted act of terrorism and stricter security measures were quickly imposed on airline travel.
It did not specify what they were.
The incident has echoes of the so-called shoe bomber Richard Reid,

a lot of nigerians are seriously fucked up, culturally and mentally. speaking as someone who did a degree where more than half the students in my year were Nigerian.
most are fundamentalist christians, but i guess some of them are fundamentalist muslims too. that said, maybe 3 of them were really great, intelligent and friendly, and not at all mental.
one of the mental ones asked me on the first day how to operate a computer mouse. he was holding it upside down (i.e. with the 'tail' towards him). impressive start to a postgraduate master's degree.

they justify terror acts as being a type of guerrilla warfare. since they can't match the army of whom they are fighting, they sneak around and try to attack them while they are not looking. i'm sure they feel that killing innocent civilians sends a stronger and more urgent message, but it also makes what they are doing more condemnable (vs some rebel militia insurgency a-teaming it and blowing up military targets.)

Yes, it sends the message they don't care a bit about the life of any westerner; or moderate Muslim for that matter: anyone that's not a fundamentalist like them.
It's stupid to compare atrocities, however, I never understood this no women and children kind of mentality (well children is worse), and that it's less worse when you blow up a soldier. Because: no, a soldier did not sign up to the army to get blown up for you making some kind of point.

the point of blowing up a plane/building/whatever is to create terror. that's why they're called terrorists. the loss of life is not the aim, it's the resulting fear that people will have that they too could die. this stops people from doing their everyday activities normally, reduces productivity, sends the gov't into overdrive spending money on ineffective anti-terror measures and creating laws which only serve to inconvenience the common man, and eventually drags a society into a slumbering mess of panic-induced stagnancy.

right, that is true and all war is horrible. however there are going to be times when some oppressive government or invading force comes along and there just is no other option. for instance the resistance movements in countries occupied by nazi germany, or even the colonial militias of the american revolution.
to give a dork example, how about star wars. how many people were stationed on either death star when it was blown up? were they all evil because they were forced to serve under this regime? i bet they weren't all soldiers, either. there would have been doctors, families of soldiers, politicians, technical workers, etc. of course it had to be taken out because they were blowing up entire planets. again, a dork example but it translates to real world things.
hedphukkerr: you may want to go to the airport about 3 hours early.

Al Qaida terrorists are not, or are hardly repressed though. Hardly because they fight against Western involvement in the Middle East. Otherwise they're fighting for ideologies, in a holy war.

i studied corporate communication.. basically nigerian branches of major oil companies (bp, shell etc) send nigerian students to the UK to learn this stuff and go back and run the companies for them. but most of them aren't particularly interested in learning most of the time.
totally different culture of course..

btw Nigeria is not exactly the world's most oppressed muslim country, in that (a) most of it is Christian, and (b) it's not altogether that oppressed, more exploited

Like fuck it's overrated!
Not many people have heard of Clerks. And if they have it has taken a long time and lots of other films Kevin Smith to make Clerks famous.
I'll stand for a lot of stuff you say Stein, but not this! ;)

I think if you are so so scared of getting on a plane and it getting bombed, you have to think of the odds, to make it impossible to get blown up, you take the bomb on board, cus what would be the odds of someone else taking one too?
