Hardware Sequencers

Who here uses them? I'm researching which one to get but
it's a little overwhelming having never even touched one.
Does anybody have any suggestions?? I mainly just want it to
sequence, not to sample or have a ton of internal drum/synth
sounds - though from what i've read it looks like 2 of 3 of
those characteristics typically go hand in hand.

the alesis mmt8 looks fresh but hard to find... Is there
something fairly similar??

I don't know nothing about sequencing, but your signature
photo reminds me of this:

one smart monkey right there.

how do you open a beer bottle without a bottle opener?

the mmt8 is not hard to find. it's also very cheap! however
they have a reputation for getting a bit flimsy in their old
age (mine is, for example). it's not the worlds most
advanced sequencer, but it's nice for what it is. the
ensoniq esq1 is similiar to it. I used to have an MPC, so
you could look into that as well. I didn't really dig it,
but it's powerful. there is also the yamaha qy-series. I
wanna try one of those one day.

for more info about the mmt8 and esq1, ask the Fahmeister.

I think Russel McDust uses hardware sequencers, or maybe he
uses hardware tone generators and software sequencers, I
dunno, ask him.

retape: yes and yes

cwnt: and yes

Those are all really nice sequencers to look into. Also
check on the Roland sequencers, the MC series. I quite liked
the MC-4, but that was only CV Gate (but with a LOAD of
options!), don't know what you're really aiming for. The
ESQ-1 is basically 8 synthesizers in one package that comes
with the sequencer (which also has step sequence, if you
prefer that), and the MMT8 is small, and really really easy
to use but is mainly just for recording midi to 8 tracks and
sequencing them into songs, it doesn't really have step
sequence for instance (you can change the notes you've
entered later on but i found this a bit tedious). Want to
know how easy the MMT8 is? The manual is printed inside the
small door on top of the MMT8 :D That's all the manual you
need!

wow that video is outstanding!
THanks all! Yeah the QY10 is another one on my list...

Fah: I've been using reason forever but i hate using it in a
live setting, so i basically want a main hardware sequencer
that i can patch a couple of flexible synths/drum machines
into. I'm good to go for the most part on the synths/dm end
but I can't wrap my head around which sequencer to get... I
don't think a huge expensive MPC type thing is ideal cuz i
don't care about sampling or internal synths/drums...

So i guess a more advanced version of an MMT8, or possibly
the MMT8 is the one i want? Is there something close to MMT8
with step sequencer???

the yamaha rm1x has an outstanding sequencer, shame about
the rest of it really.

to me it sounds like you'd like the mmt8, or the esq1 (or
ableton live).

yeah i have ableton.. but again i wanna try to avoid having
a computer on stage until it becomes inevitable i guess.

anybody familiar with the orb by futureretro?

http://www.future-retro.com/orboverview.html

its one of the only newer brands i can find that is
basically a standalone sequencer

consider a second hand monomachine - midimachines.

I've used the MMT8 live to trigger vst instruments on my
lappytop, works very well actually. You can just easily
switch tracks on and off, three at the same time or just all
of em (if you have 8 fingers free at that moment), switch
around between sequences etc, record midi controls.

roland mc500 you could find maybe for 20 quid

It seems like a lot of em are monophonic, but it's not
always specified...

I think i might go with the qy100 cuz i need something
polyphonic

the qy 100 is lovely but it requires you to work a bit. I
love it.

I just picked this up, Pretty cool. I'm just having an
issue with looping in SONG mode. There seems to be a
millisecond delay before the step sequence starts again,
have you experienced this? Does another device need to be
the master clock in order for it to work properly?

IT works fine in pattern mode, I guess song mode just isn't
ideal for looping :P

Using hardware is overwhelmingly nuts because there are too
many possibilities.

I got a machinedrum and it's fucking brilliant as a
sequencer!!!!!!!! I almost need two now, one for drums and
one as a sequencer brain. I think.

How many possibilities are there with software?

How many possibilities are there with hardware?

Forget analogue signal paths as you obvioulsey have.

YO CHILL OUT DOG! I Get overwhelmed easily! It's a weakness
of mine I am aware of that

menus really overwhelm me holy crap, i get all nervous when
i go to subway and i haven't had ample time to think about
it and there's someone in line in front and behind so u are
on the spot. it's a big line too so u can't ditch out or
u'll miss lunch altogether.

I do find that with software it is a lot easier to start
making sounds without having much knowledge of what to do,
whereas hardware you ideally should have somewhat of an idea
of what you are doing! Especially cuz it can be costly!
