I'm off to Berlin for 5 days as a birthday present from my
girlfriend. Anyone able to recommend places to visit while
there? I don't know any German and my English is rusty, so
does anybody know any Scouse friendly places?

Cheers.

there are plenty places around
Kreuzberg/Friedrichshain/Prenzlauer Berg... it's great for
just walking around too.

If the weather is nice you might want to check out
Teufelsberg (google it), David Lynch wanted to buy it for
some sorta Krishna thing...

if you want to visit Berghain, best advice is to go Sunday
around 9 or ten a.m. imo, it's open until the evening hours.
It is the best excuse to get drunk before noon.

in these places nobody will demand that you talk to them.

can't think of anything else right now.

exactly - i had to go there to experience this for myself
but seriously you can have a great time going to the
berghain in the morning raving between people that are there
since saturday evening. there is a really cool vibe and
sometimes you can even get a free drink at the bar if you
are handsome enough :P

besides that - i'd recommend a tour from the fernsehturm on
the alexander platz up the unter den linden street to the
brandenburger tor with a visit halway through at the
friedrichstrasse and see checkpoint charlie. then go further
to the siegessaule. you could also see the kurfurstendamm
which is an awesome place but you should go there by s-bahn.
communication with the subways is really convenient and fast
so don't hesitate to use it.

i love berlin.

There's a place that does this chicken thats bathed in milk
before it's cooked. It's the only thing on the menu (along
with potato salad, sauerkraut and massive lovely beers) I
heartily recommend it and will find out the name off the
missus.

Visit the squats, some of them are amazing. Go to the
markets if you can. Don't go to KaDeWe. Theres a guy in
Prenzlauer Berg who runs this little shop which does custom,
hand made while-you-wait stencil graffiti T-shirts for 10
euros (well there was when I went four years ago) he's a
really nice guy, likes talking British politics and deserves
your dosh.

I'll post other stuff if I remember it!

Auguststrasse in Mitte - full of great private art galleries
and nice places to eat, Hamburger Bahnhof - great museum
with amazing book&video shop on Invaliden Strasse near
Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Kreuzberg/Friedrichshain/Prenzlauer
Berg - to party, squats: the most popular - go there after
midnight during weekend you should like it. If you prefere
more hardcore squats: check this list ... and have fun :) And
go for a walk down the Unter Den Linden :)

Well we're here. It's great, fallen in love with the place.
Spent today in Spandau and the Christmas Market followed by
a stroll along some amazing shopping street from Zoo down to
a massive department store called KaDeWa with Christmas
lights the whole way. Going to see Brandenburg Gate,
Checkpoint Chalie etc. Good stuff indeed.

Terence Hill thinks you should do more of the
recommendations above and less of the touristy things.

Just got home tonight. Amazing place. Nearly killed myself
slipping down the stairs with two 20kg bags at Ostcruz going
for the S9 to the airport.

I think there are a few sections left in place. The only one
I saw was near Checkpoint Charlie.

There's a great chunk of wall with a man made beach next to
it. Really fantastic and intricate graffiti. Probably should
have mentioned that earlier, sorry! Glad you had a great
time. I want to go again now.

i was only in berlin for 1 full day, so did an 8 hour
walking tour. it was awesome. so i'd suggest you do that
first up then go back to the places that you liked and check
them out more thoroughly.

our tour guide was a yank, they tend to be good tour guides
due to their enthusiasm.

I fondly remember a bar called "White trash". It's been a
year since i've been to Berlin last, so it's probably not a
cool place to go any longer!
