At first the buttons/dials look bad, but I think they are designed to be less crappy then their previous toyline equipment. Hopefully the keys aren't that tiny crappy keyset that has been on their synths as of late. That vocoder and microXL are unusable to me cause I got bighands/long fingers :P |

i seriously hate this line i'm hearing lately in every single commercial about musical gear "now everybody can make music" i mean come on. besides i think the case of this is absolutely horrible. i mean black plastic ? the microkorg was stylish as hell comparde to that, and the xl was already a turn-off for me. |

Everyone seems to be criticizing the design. I don't think its that bad. Its actually pretty useful for what the machine needs. However, its kind of ridiculous that they decided to make a keyboard sampler. A whole bunch of people are going to go out and buy it, and flood craigslist with it in 6 months because they will realize that a hardware sampler without a sequencer is a fucking pain in the ass. Editing samples on a tiny screen is a pain in the ass. Loading and saving samples without a card is a pain in the ass. Hardware samplers in general are a pain in the ass. There is a reason why ensoniq only make videocards, and akai only makes MPC's now. |

i just can't think of a person who might actually buy this. i mean it's cool for jamming along on it but the sequencer seems insuficient to make decent tracks on it - so you connect it to your pc to use your daw but then the whole thing gets useless. it doesn't really seem suited for live. i could imagine some beatboxers using it creatively live sampling their voice and playing on it but it seems that might be too difficult to pull. i'd personally rather buy an esx-1 which has a decent sequencer capable of making whole tracks, very good effects and is really nic for playing live. yeah speaking of esx-1 - why has korg stopped making beatboxes? right now where you have only the machinedrum and monomachine, the roland mc's and an awful lot of 909 and 808 copies (yuk) a newer esx-1 or emx-1 for half the price of the machine drum would be just a big bang. |

I think it's a little more beefed up than an old Casio SK-1 or SK-5, for that matter. Loads of memory and why does Korg insist on putting the Kaoss Engine into all of their stuff? Why can't they come up with something else for effects? This thing looks fucking toyish, but how big are the actual keys? If it's like a 3 year olds Casio SK-1, then no. The only thing that I might be ok with, is it's USB interface to a computer for further audio manipulation/editing. That being said, all of this could be done on a laptop... who would take this with them and not bring a laptop? |

exactly my point - imho companies that make musical gear should make a clear line between professional standalone hardware and stuff for the homebrew-laptop-musician. |

It's a toy, but looks like it could be a fun toy. Seems to have a function to auto chop then assign to keyboard! I think there's a big market for this sort of thing for drunk people. Seriously, how much fun could a room full of drunk students have with one? And unlike a MPC or whatever, the owner probably isn't too fussed if it gets some abuse (I'm guessing it's not too expensive, haven't checked) |

id have it just cause its portable and leave it in the living room for fun when people come over... "hey whats that thing do!" unable to EQ sounds after recording makes it not worth the money to me. how does the sequencer work? can you mute sounds? does the kaoss engine have an equalizer? if i had to plug it into the computer to equalize sounds id be very upset |

ah. Well, even still, this doesn't look like something that people would want as the center for their studio. Most samplers that have sequencer integration kind of act like that. The thing that the mpc's have is the 2x/4x midi out and useful sequencing interface. You can use it as your studio brain, and it works really well for live work because you can trigger different sequences with the pads. This doesn't seem to be the same thing. I could be wrong. Even with all its features the mpc is a bit too much of an anachronism to be useful these days. |
