creative / unusual music

i'm pretty bored by music these days. i'm trying to find
music that interests me. what's the most unusual music (of
any genre) you can think of? it doesn't matter if you like
it or not. personally i love a lot of music most people seem
to consider ridiculous and positively bad (such as kool
keith's lost masters stuff, for instance). youtube links
would be appreciated, y'all.

who knows what this guy would consider "creative / unusual".
we don't know what his tastes are like or what his knowledge
of music is like.

it's ok, it's just that you've lost your sense of taste of
music. Like some people actually lose their sense of taste.
They cannot appreciate good food.

I like that music, thanks.

I should have spent more time in Andalusia when I visited
Spain. I loved the Alcazar in Seville but only spent one day
there. :-/ The Mezquita in Cordoba was a mind altering
experience, and then we saw a great flamenco show that night
right next door, under the stars in a courtyard. Sigh.

Love the stuff they put out.

Just listen to anything on the Roster-Noton label if you
want to hear some pretty creative and unusual electronic
music. Also a lot of cool stuff going on in instrumental
hip-hop land these days like Flying Lotus, Major Lazer,
Hudson Mohawke, Ras G....

Creative and interesting are everywhere, but... DIFFERENT,
can also be perceived as such. Maybe listening to music
from "other cultures" might be interesting. Music that's
not 4/4 or using the western chromatic scale, tends to make
my brain go yay. It's like, I'm not even able to play
that shit
with my weak western instruments, without
constant string bending or modifying keyboard tunings.

If someone with Arab tone hearing (or even higher), composed
western style music (chord based complex harmonies, as
opposed to mainly lead), the results would be pretty
interesting.

Though setting that shit up in Logic would be a bitch.

Love the blend of non-western with western urban music. I'm
currently doing a track sampling Afgan strings and vocals,
and layering it above what you'd call a western harmony.
Also got some US gansgta hip hop acapella in there too.
sounds lush.

Some recommendations on a global tip....:

Andre Afram Asmar is quite interesting - a bit hit/miss, but
a good listen. He's an American Palistinian.

Janka Nabay's been rockin' my world for a bit:
http://www.myspace.com/jankanabay
It's called Bubu Music - Islamic street music from Sierra
Leone

Asa Chang & Junray are legendary. A mix of western,
Japanese, Chinese, Indian and all sorts of shit.

it's a bit of hit and miss with sound mixtures, the most of
the time i tend to hear stuff that fits neither here nor
there, music that ends up to be pointless, or flaccid if you
will. we had a discussion with the mermaidman some time ago
about this, about d'n'b influences.i usually prefer things
to be 'pure' in their musical tradition but developed, in
order to sound modern (that's the interpretation i give to a
supposed 'western' style) ect.
metamophosis require a lot of effort

You know... while so many overweight and longhaired mofoz
are in their bedrooms and pushing boundaries in the
underground, the upperground/overground crowd also push
boundaries...

But it's really, really embarrassing.

yeah, leave it to the nerds. Poor poor Beethoven...

Still, Elgar wouldn't much like the travesty that Venetian
Snares committed upon his Cello concerto!! hahaha - I can
say that freely now, without fear of being silenced!!!
Woohoo!

i should also add that Conlon Nancarrow changed my view on
music forever. his laborious and obsessive nature is beyond
words.

i still remember when i heard 'studies for player piano' for
the first time. it was like an epiphany. he throws every
single 'rule' of western music out the window. five fucking
stars.

Mike P didn't like that I questioned one compositional
aspect of Snares' music - it seemingly all being in 7/4
time.

This prompted Snares to pitch in with homophobia - and then
to tell me that he's met hay people and he thinks they're
great! What a great guy!

It's a shame that the same has happened to me. I used to
like most of his music, but really gone off it due to his
comments.. which is a shame, really; his music should speak
for itself, and it's annoying that personal differences have
to affect that.

Anyway, I've left the incident behind me, really. I just
bought it up for a bit of fun! ;-)
