I vote either Debian or Red hat. There's another flavor begining with "G" that I can't remember. I liked that too :) I don't have much call to use linux/unix nowadays, I only used it really when doing machine code. |

Is slackware still around? It didn't have a packaging system last time I looked at it years ago so it was hard to maintain. I have no idea how a modern distro runs on an old machine like yours. You might have to search out a special "slim" distro or maybe try FreeBSD. |

I installed slackware a few weeks ago. It is doing alright. I had major grief with the GMP in Xwindows but managed to fix a few scripts to get it working. I am now starting to enjoy the FREE side of it all. |

I swear you're meant to pronounce linux "lee-nooks" and not "lie-nux" or "lin-ux" (like "unix"). The pun is a written rather than spoken one, as Linus (pronounced "Lee-noose", I think, can someone confirm that?) realised his name looked a bit like unix backwards... Not a big deal, but it really used to annoy me when lecturers & people "corrected" me. Still, I guess the journal I read that in could of been wrong... |

Pretty sure Linus pronounces it li'nuks. But I don't think there's a direct translation of the Swedish "i" to English. Or something like that. (Linus is actually ethnic Swede living in Finland, or so I've heard) |

to be specific, i think linus is an swedish-speaking finn, like me. of course i can't be sure. the swedish speaking finlanders are not ethnically swedish really, we have all the bad genes every 'normal' finn has :) |
