beseen.com which i had used for years apparently stopped

counters i can sign up for? thanks.

I've used thecounter.com ok for a couple of years without
any problems...seems to work fine & "does what it says on
the tin"...

They do a bare bones basic one for free or a subs one with
extra features...

If you've got your own domain (.org, .com etc..) then your
ISP has probably got free counters set up anyway...checking
there is another option...

(if you can, I always think it's better to try and get
access to your own log files if at all possible...then you
can analyse to death and take further than just a count of
hits...kinda funky to see who's linking to you & what sort
of visitors you get...)...

All part of dom-com shakeup...people who previously thought
just getting people to view your site was a valid indicator
of future earnings are no more.. no-one can get any VC or
investor interest without showing there's a definate revenue
stream...

so yeah, it might look a bit sneaky, but all they are really
doing is ensuring future survival by charging for the
service they provide...

If you've got a web host some server side scripting
languages enabled you could probably download one from
hotscripts.com or somewhere similar. By a server side
scripting language i mean like php, jsp, asp, etc.

The big advantage is that you don't have to rely on other
hosts, and can be fully customized to suit your site.

it makes sense, and i know NOTHING in this world is free.

i just wish they would be upfront about things....instead of
suckering you in and then springing on the CHARGES. it's the
hidden charges that drive me batty.

if i knew up front, then i'd know what i was getting into ya
know =0)

agreed...hidden charges are the worst...

I hate the way it's so difficult to download the FREE
version of RealPlayer...they are sooo sneaky & hide it away
with tiny tiny links whilst the ver that costs extra get 95%
of the screen...

They are probably the worst out there I can think of...

What about porn sites that make you download premium rate
diallers?

That was a bad one...doubt you'd get away with that sort of
scam anymore...people seem a lot more wary of downloading &
running stuff due to these sort of scams & viruses...

(Didn't it download a dialer...disconnect & then re-dial the
new number, a premium rate call to somewhere in russia...

Technically pretty clever...& kinda funny as it was so
sucessful...

)

Yep...they still try to do it now...I found this fact out
when I *accidently* happen to occasionally stumble across
sites if ill repute on my daily journey along the
information super highway.
