...that I got searched on the way back from Greece on the
grounds that I was wearing a communist star t-shirt. Bloody
fascists. Really it'd be a pretty ballsy double bluff to
attempt a terrorist attack wearing something so blatently
political.

Fortunately the fact that I was wearing an expensive jacket
and reading an anti-marxist autobiography when they stopped
me meant that I wasn't detained for too long...

"random" searches my ass

where me, and another guy my age.

We both wore tshirts and had scruffy hair, and facial hair

i hate america sometimes

Ha, ha. This is what happens when a right-winger
appropriates the symbols of class struggle as a fashion
accessory!

Have a good time anyway? And whose biog were you reading
then?

hehe .. the communist star/anti-marxist autobiography combo
reminds me of Full Metal Jacket: "... something something
... the duality of man..."

V. Nabokov's autobiography. I was just reading the part
where he's arguing with some english leftist when they
stopped me.

Amusingly, the T-shirt was one from Saigon's famous
"Apocalypse Now" bar. From the front it just looks like a
bright red t-shirt with a yellow communist star on the
chest.

Zeus:
Yep and on the way into greece I was the only person
not asked for their passport, probably because of the fact
that addressed the customs officer in Greek and I look
slightly greek.

I see left-right wing (politcally) as a circle rather than a
line- past a point they start becoming more and more like
each other. Fascism is a form of socialism after all...

I'd say I'm more right wing than left generally, but I
dislike such general terms.

Oh yeah, hanging never went away- There are still 3/4
hanging offences in the UK under current law. The last set
of working gallows is on portsmouth naval dockyard, I think
the last hanging was in the mid 70's.

Does anyone agree with me that buying clothes advertising,
for example Che Guevara or CCCP is a complete paradox?
Its lining the pockets of cheeky capitalist corporations by
buying the clothes they sell declaring your support for
left-wing causes?

1. High treason (Regicide, Giving nuke security codes to
other countries etc.),

2. Treason in Time of War (Defecting to another army/ giving
info to someone we're at war with).

3. Arson on a naval dockyard- Bizarrely, not a death
sentence on air force bases or army barracks!

I think there's one more too, but I can't remember it...

Nothing to do with fair trade. My point is that these
companies must be laughing behind the consumers backs as
they show thier support for left-wingers by giving money to
capitalist companies who simply use an image of a genuine
communist for their monetary ends.

The well known image of Che Guevara is (contrary to popular
belief) copyrighted. The photogropher who took it, whilst
not making it "public domain" chose not to claim royalties
on posters etc. as he was a communist and wanted che's image
to spread. The only time he has prohibited its use was when
a cuban vodka manufacturer tried to use it on their bottles.
He objected on the grounds that che hardly ever drank...

I know what u mean, but if I buy used clothes, my money
never goes to their hands. And some leftie clothes are not
made by corps.

I always wear shit clothes, cheap, ugly stuff. But that can
be a form of expression too. I don't want to express
anything with my appearance and because people expect me to,
I confuse them most of the time as I act very differently to
how I'm dressed.

I have a friend who's g/f is from Czechoslovakia and gets
really pissed at people here wearing soviet-style clothing
as fashion. Fair enough.

As for the image of Che, its come to symbolise nothing. Its
just another empty icon sold as fashion. Anything and
everything can be sold for profit.

I find that lots of lefty "fair trade" clothes (like the
ones made out of hemp) are itchy, ill tailored and often
only single sticked and as such not very durable. If there
was a fair trade brand of quality "smart" shirts etc. I'd
buy them, but I guess not enough office workers care about
that sort of thing.

By way of comparison, fair trade food is often of better
quality than "corporate food" due to the simplicity &
quality of the ingredients rather than stacks of chemicals.

single sticked = single stiched (good quality clothes are
double or treble stiched).

I don't like expensive clothes- just durable well made easy
to iron ones.

What's wrong with buying clothes from small, family owned
italian tailors? Good clothes and you're not exploiting
sweat shop labour...

My gf made her own tailored trousers a few weeks ago. They
fit her far better than stuff you buy in shops. Perhaps
textile technology (aka sewing) should be given more
emphasis in schools?
