Why do so few have good taste in music?

Sure alot of my pals like the music I like, but generally
why do we see such tripe on the charts and so on? England
is the land of the greatest music and yet Britney Spears
tops the charts all the time...wtf is wrong with everyone,
why can't more people appreciate good music and genres such
as idm and goa trance and so on...not that I really care,
it's just strange.

the bell shaped curve.

Anthropology tells us that the most amount of people have to
be into the most average stuff.

Unfortunately AE, the vast majority of the general public
are morons. Happy to walk about in a daze listening to
whatever talentless teenager has won the latest corporate
sponsored TV talent show and got a record deal.
You can't legislate for morons.

It's a form of mind control. If music is too eccentric
people will wake up from their dream state. You see once you
think past four beats to the bar your mind can decode other
equations with much more ease. Also EMI and BMI have the
most money and want to make the most money, So if you check
all your pop CD's most of the ones on the Radio will have
either BMI or EMI on, it may differ in other countries. Most
people don't even know other music exists and the way things
are set up (I'm indicating pecking order here) you are seen
as sad and an outcast if you listen to anything but the
normal. So play an Aphex track to a trendy and he will be
trained to insult you. Stops another 60's y'see. Just the
same reason drugs are given a bad name when most of the time
they are safer then people claim.

We are thru the looking glass here people... ^o.o^

The people I know who 'do' love the music I like (crazy
music I guess) are a lot more creative and interesting to be
around too...it's like we're a special breed, we should
claim an island and have it just for crazy music lovers! It
could be called 'Cramusers Island'! ahaha, lets reach for
that mountain

The 'special breed' idea and having our own place idea come
up a lot in my music discussions. I always thought that
music has the power to decode your mind in different ways.
Aphex breaks you out of the norm and so do others.

Pop idol however helps you sink into house debt, car dept,
work and 'normal' life. All could be bull shit but have a
little gander and ponder.

Either way music affects your mind a lot.

But, fuck it. It's nice to pat each other on the back and
congratulate each other for our good taste, but fuck it, I
don't consider my taste to be better than someone who's
into linkin park/ britney etc.... It's elitist.

Yes. But still alternative. The moment someone outcasts me
for listening to 'Shite Music' I can outcast them for
confirming to a standard.

If they like it and think that music is good in their minds
it's good and no more can be said. Shame their world of
music is controlled for profit and universal standards.

I can't be arsed slating anyone for their musical tastes, I
just satisfy myself with the FACT that, say a Robbie
Williams fan is simply mentally deluded into thinking he is
good (he is the scum of the Earth) and lacks the willpower
to disagree with the bombardment of advertising pressure
exerted by the record companies/tabloids.
Weakminded fools.

yeah well popular music has to be "easy" to listen to...
because it is played everywhere. In supermarkets, at my
work, on the radio when other people are working etc...

I don't think people would be just as relaxed in the
supermarket if they played some squarepusher or afx there
;-)

Plus you can instantly hum along with most pop-music the
first time you hear it... and after 3 more times you'll
probably be singing along to the lyrics as well.

On the other hand when i listen to my music... it takes lots
of time to get used to it before i really start to
appreciate it... which is probably why it will never become
really popular. And for as far as IDM goes... the lack of
lyrics is probably an important factor why it will never be
#1 in the charts.

I reckon if richard would paste some catchy female vocals
over some of his songs, he'd get played ALOT more (i'm happy
he doesn't do this though :-D).

Yeah, yeah, I hear you. However, most of what we think is so
fucking great within IDM is also trash. Few are truly great.

You've got to speed it up
And then you've got to slow it down
'Cos if you believe that a love can hit the top
You've got to play around
And soon you will find
That there comes a time
For making your mind up

The simpleton masses will listen to whatever they're told

more often than not get to number1. They're all sheep, and
someone should lead them off a huge spike-filled precipice

Yes Bonk made a very very good point there. Once it's
popular you don't feel really part of it any more. it's not
your special thing and everyone talks about it. boring.

he did?

That is sweet :-p

madonna is a good example of someone who has made
"difficult" dance music into a format a wide audience can
enjoy.

(and actually i think some song of her last 2 albums sound
pretty good).

But still i feel it is a shame how these things go...
something truly beautiful and unique is made into regular
popmusic... just as long as until what was once beautiful
becomes boring.

A few days ago i saw a video by the bombfunk MC's called...

eh... live your life? or love your life? i can't remember.

It sounded like it was made up out of the same sounds go
plastic is made of, only much more basic and simple (and
boring) and with catchy vocals over it... it pissed me off
:-p

popular music = maybe a part of original music.

IDM, electronic stuff, drill'n'bass, xperimental stuff,
braindance and so are the extremes of music, my opinion...

This is just what I'm talking about: listening to the music
because it's your social niche/ safe haven and not for it
being good music is lame. And thinking of it as good music
just because it's weird/ experimental/ whatever is lame too.

That's rubbish.
If the fact that more people listening to Aphex detracted
from your personal enjoyment then you are not so much a fan
of the tunes but of the fact that it is quite an elitist
genre. Do you think that Aphex would alter his style because
suddenly more people are listening to him? I don't....If it
ain't broke, don't fix it.

is more a history... i don't care how much people are
listening to afx...

I wouldn't mind going to the supermarket and hearing Stone
in focus.

I'm not generally one to judge people based solely on
musical taste, but i agree that people who listen to "our"
kind of music seem a bit more creative.

if we arranged such an island community - you will still get
the masses, people that like the pretty stuff like icbyd,
mhtrtc etc. and they will most likely also be looked down
upon people that are into more obscure/harsher?- [or
bubblegum pop?] stuff, that these former people will
consider "noise", "rubbish" "nonsense" etc ..

why that island would never work.

always .. hehe.. who knows, maybe in 200 years NOT listening
to music is the most trendy thing - and the talk will be
about what sort of ear muffs one should get for the best
silence (esp. with profound lack of bass) ..

still, inspite of all this meta-social stuff, i'd still like
to think its about the music ..

eventually more people would get turned onto him and then of

Perhaps the "weird" music we listen to is mostly appealing
to people who enjoy creating. Anything weird/abnormal
explores a new method/expresses a new idea... one of the
main reasons I've been interested in autechre and crunch and
stuff is for the ideas they give me to create something
myself. Change is necesary for something to progress from
simpler/worse to more organized/better... this is subjective
just like whether or not you think that some of the current
products of evolution (people) are "better/more
organized/more complex" than simpler replicating primitive
molecules. I'm trying to say that MUTATION is the single
cause of the progression ,and our weird music is sorta a
mutagen? I'll just shudup
