well, today is my topic-starting day, but i'd like have
some conversation about pictorial arts here too :)

i do a lot of painting anf the greatest result comes from
good music (idm or trip hop) and painting experiences are
really trippy for me. does anyone else have similar
experiences? and yes, i do that sober.

also, i'd like to know what artists have made the greatest
influence to all you art-intrested people out there?

music does influence my painting, never use drugs,
idm/ambient is best for me.

influences: pollock, rauchenburg (sp?), lichenstein...

I have totally had psychedellic experiences while painting!
Never really talked about it with anyone however.

Painting I believe, along with composing music, constructing
and a few other things, has the tendency to throw one back
into an ancient Freudian state.

we pick up a paint brush and *BAM*, we're back in our caves
munching on wooly mammoth and experiencing one of the first
forms of expression.

at the time of ancient man, that transcendental moment of
creating art had to be SO intense that it's no wonder one
would feel a little strange when they start to rehash those
memories. when our minds reach back that far, it would seem
that we would become closer to that 'universal knowledge'
that all of us have/had... not unlike a chemical aided
psychedelic experience.

i'm having computer issues....waaaaah

i hope this comment goes through cos several have NOT.

i have an art degree, my favourite artist is Vincent Van
Gogh....his painting are like liquid light to me....so
beautiful....sad.....tragic.....all at the SAME time. i
would put my nose up to the glass to see his brush
strokes....you could see the hair from the brush in some
pieces. it was so fantastic it made me SHAKE!!

different things influence me, usually it's something i SEE.
i'm more a visual person so while music can be wonderful it
doesn't inspire me to make something. it's usually something
from nature!

*crosses fingers this goes through*

i don't know how to make art or anything (i don't even know
how to draw anything right), but today, i had 'ass itch by
korn in my head, and i drew little characters killing
themselves, or hung, or shooting other characters, on the
front of a white polaroid with a black permanent marker (i
regret not having had a red one too, to draw the blood...),
and on the back of the polaroid, i drew a cute little devil,
with both breasts and a penis (already seen the devil
represented like that somewhere), holding a little flower,
and grinning.

i'm doing my diploma of arts about the early finnish
rockpaintings (which, of course, are much younger than the
european ones because of the ice age) and it's one fantastic
world in those!

no chemical could ever give the same experience an intensive
painting session does. i just moved to the countryside do i
could concentrate in my painting. (but i also have to study
a bit at the same time and thats not so nice).

it's so sad that art isn't valued so highly nowadays than it
was 100 years ago.

i just bought the greatest painting of a young russian
artist. it costed me a lot but it really makes one feel good
to invest in this way.

(ok thinking of all the records i would have gotten with the
same money makes me just bit sad)

or some other time i had 'undertow' by tool in my head, it
was 3am or anything and i was becoming mad because i
couldn't sleep, so i lit up the lamp, took a pen and drew
something very messy on the page of my diary... i remember
there was an alarm-clock, a corpse, some monster grinning,
and some other stuff on the drawing, but it was really messy
(besides when i draw things they're usually very small)...

van gogh really is great :)

i love his way of using color. it's like he makes the color
talk or something. i haven't quite figured it out yet :)

also, there are some great finnish symbolists i love, like
hugo simberg (you've probably never even heard of him)

Hans arp, Duchamp (Both Dadaists)
and Dali.

More recently Chagall.

This is such a toughy I mean there's just so many good
painters.

I've only done a little painting, just like to support the
subject :-) Good one neeta

same line as the rest of the artists of their time.

www.arcanegraphics.com click on bdt. thats me and a few
other people doing a design by theme. each person comes up
with a theme and the others have to evolve off it, theres
only three themes up, but more to come.

as far as art on canvas is concerned, i've begun a series of
fast drawn emotional pieces done as minimalistic as
possible. my girlfriend asked me last night as i sketched
her if i ever took my time and used detail, i said there was
no time the moment would have been gone if i thought too
hard about the sketch

I paint or atleast i used to.
Me and raimons (from this board) had art as our main course
in school.
It was a crappy education with crappy teachers.
We learned nothing we didn't know before except for all the
stuff about old boring artists.
But atleast we got to be creative and both me and Raimons
are the types that go nuts if we don't.
Im gonna start painting again now when i have more time on
my hands.
Maybe i will show you sometime.

well i used to be in a very good art school but i found that
an oppressing and depressing enviroment. now i only get
private evaluations of my art teacher. she comes to our
house just to see my stuff.

art schools might give a nice technical aid but i've never
found them to give anything to my actual creativity.

the movements that have made the greatest impression on my
art are dadaism and post-impressionism, but i'm a fan of all
eras of art from around the world. i'm most interested in
modern art though.

my favorite museum in america is the american visionary art
museum (link). it's art made by the insane or
otherwise mentally "different". shockingly obsessive detail
and strange concepts.

there was this great expedition in kiasma (the modern art

and it really influenced me. i think the same expedition has
been travelling around the world?

i'm working on a web site where people can put their artwork
up for visitors to see, like an electronic gallery. i wish
everyone posting in this thread would put their stuff up
there, it's really a lot of fun. any format is fine:
digital, scanned paintings, sketches, photos, etc.

Well first of all, hi, because I'm new to this board, and
second, yes I absolutely agree that it is a trippy
experience to paint while listening to music in the back. I
am just working on a wallpainting and the music I play while
painting is almost always "selected ambient works II". It
has to be soothing music like that because I work with alot
of detail. My influences come mainly from two dutch masters,
"Hieronymus Bosch" and "Pieter Bruegel". After visiting the
Bosch exposition in Rotterdam I've gotten some new respect
for his works.

I dont get these pyscadellic sensations... with listening to
music... but I do get some really trippy things happening
when I sketch in public.... like in a coffee shop... or at a
nightclub... on time i sketched while listening to hardcore
at a club... and that was NUTS. There is this one book that
I recently got.... the title is... GONZO ART. I havent
really read it yet... I got it yesterday... but its the best
art I have seen in a while... really raw... and in your
face.... anyone else hear of this guy. OH AND MC ESCHER...
crazy stuff

I'd have to say that Dali, H.R Giger and James Gleeson would
have to be the biggest influences for me whilst studying
fine arts, As for music I think that anything that effects
your mood and gets into your head will effect what comes out
on the canvas/paper, to see what I've done follow this link
http://www.comcen.com.au/~tinkler/index2.html I'd much
appreciate some feedback :)
