Which of these has had more influence on electronic music
and music in general over the past decade.

AFX debut 1991
Ae debut 1994

therefore AFX was ahead of Ae, therefore the field leader of
the two

AFX has had greater exposure. Sales-wise I suspect Aphex has
outsold Ae 3 : 1 . Therefore greater exposure = likelihood
of more influence.

AFX has been cited by other notable artists eg Radiohead as
inspiration. I aint heard such bands hailing Ae in this
way.

How many twists and turns have Ae taken between albums ? It
seems they have steadily become darker and more abstract ,
but not with the eclectic variations of Aphex (drill n'
bass/ ambient/ piano melodies/ industrial techno etc...).
Therefore Aphex has pushed more boundaries and turned more
heads style-wise.

and limitless other reasons I suppose....

It is an odd question , as the obvious answer is AFX. Ae are
good , but far less influential .

Perhaps they have had an equal influence on the electronic
music scenes' tendency towards abstract track-names..

Hmm. I read an interview in which Thom Yorke cited Autechre
as a major influence on Kid A and Amnesiac, whereas when
asked about AFX, he said he hadn't really listened.

Aphex has had a greater influence on me

possibly incorrectly.
But at least I bothered to indulge your topic; perhaps
someone else would like to share their thoughts ?

Aphex twin.

Thom Yorke was only trying to sound cooler by saying he was
influenced by autehcre because he doesn't sound like
autechre. Radiohead obviously was more influenced by aphex
twin and really not even much there either. But they
couldn't say "we are influenced by aphex" because you can
hear it a lil and then people would say "you suck, you
ripped him off"

Final statement, you can't really admit your true
inspirations if you blatently try to sound like your
inspiration. If so, lie about your inspirations.

thom yorke tries to sound cool quite often, but i don't want
to turn this into a radiohead and their influences
discussion, becuase there are plenty of those on this MB.

Radiohead are a bit pretentious... make that VERY
pretentious... but I love them, and they love me.

I'd say Aphex is more important... but I like Autechre more,
I think. Aphex was more influential to me, personally, but
I'm more into Autechre. But if not for Aphex, I'd never know
about Booth and Brown. Aphex was the hub to all electronic
music, for me.

same here about AFX. Through him I got into Squarepusher and
then Ae and so on. Radiohead actually got me into electronic
music with Kid A though, so even if they are pretentious
(which they are), atleast they put it to good use.

it depends:afx has influenced a lot of rephlex artists(of
course!) and probably the underground-mainstream(there's no
contraddiction!!) of people like bjork, radiohead and in a
certain way madonna

autechre have influenced much of warp music (brothomstates
but even boards of canada owe something to their music)

compilation by wap

Yeah, it was Kid A that got me into Aphex, too... Radiohead
did electronic music a great service by bringing it (kind
of) to the mainstream. Did Richard a fucking favor by
recruiting more ''IDMers'', but he hates them anyway.

actually i can't see any similarities beteewn radiohead and
aphex.radiohead of the last two albums still sound like
radiohead...bjork made a real great service to idm stuff
first with the black dig-plaid then with mark bell-lfo,she
didn't need to copy anyone it was much more a collaboration

yeah you're right, ae debuted in 92, but i've read things
about them that date them back to 1988.

Amnesiac is very much like electronica, Of course he's still
in his band and he has band beats but its completely
different then other bands. =)

yes what i want to say is that radiohead are superior to
most of the pop-rock bands of the world, but as far as
electronica i'm happy they are not the reason why i chose to
listen that type of music and that i enjoyed it long before
kid a was released

i agree with you there. radioheads forays into electronica
are good, but not as good as AFX, ae etc. Although hearing
Kid A and then moving onto Warp Records artists and so on
made me appreciate electronic music more.

Well they would never be like Aphex Twin or any other
electronica genre, but its ok to say they've reached into it
without going to far.

I have 3 Radiohead albums are they are not different from
the others.

which three, because ok computer is the standout and is
pretty different from everything else they've done.

Kid A
Ok computer
Amnesiac

The only three I need to make me satisfied

right on because the first one sucks and the second one is
only good if you really like guitar rock.

IMHO, Ophecks is right. Ae might be better somewhere,
they're more conceptual, more smoothly-finished; bud AFX is
the daddy of it all, undoubtedly...
