Im goin to the WARP US mini tour on wednesday... and I
wanted to make some demo cds, to try to give to some warp
artists if I can...

...but im just uninspired lately...

I am trying to edit my previous songs to put on the cd,
change the EQmix, change some parts here and there...

but nothing is sounding right, and im FUCKING PISSED OFF.

i got one last day to get these tracks sounding the way I
want em to.

dont worrie they probably will use them as coasters

using his equipment on stage. :)

Go for it!!!

and if it doesn't work, I'd just give them a cd with the
songs, as they are now.
it's better than nothing...

GOOD LUCK!!!!

Do U really want to choose something that you shat out in a
couple days as a representation of yourself to a record
label?

My advise, take your 4-6 best trax, trim them down, do some
quality fading, beatmixing, what-have-you, and give them
something under 15 minutes long.

If they like it they will ask for more (remember to include
your email/phone/contact info)

offline Laqeuro from New York City (United States) on 2002-07-30 07:39 [#00330221]

just give em' to to them

they'll like them, don't worry

if they don't, take their criticsm into consideration when
making your next track.

this phase will pass eventually and you will continue to
make great music again.

just wait

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-07-30 07:40 [#00330224]
Points: 14042 Status: Lurker

no, its not something i shat out

these are my best 4 tracks... but I want to mix them better,
and change a few things... like the drums on 2 of the songs,
and the melody on one of them. Ideas i had for the songs
after I "finished" them

but nothing is working

i just cant focus objectivly

Oh... I misunderstood. Sorry.

If inspiration isnt doing anything for you just work
technically. If dont actually eventually become inspired
while working technically, then at least there is a larger
chance you will have your cd ready for the show, even though
it may not be as good as something that will have more
inspired. Something is better than nothing m9.

Respekt!

Im goin with my friend, who is also making a demo of his
stuff (he writes as well).... so tommorrow when he gets
here, ill have him give some objective advice about the mix
and stuff.

I have been working on my demo for about 8 months now. It
looks like it will be done in under another 4. Its taking
forever, and is starting to feel like a bunch of fucking
bamboo shoots under my nails, but I am sure it will be more
than gratifying when it is done.

sorry to burst your bubble but what makes you think you'd be
signed to WARP? i mean, look at (and listen to) their
roster. besides, they get most of their artists by pilfering
from other labels (usually labels almost as good as warp).
they're not big on unsigned acts, especially 19 year olds
still in music school with only 4 songs on his demo. don't
take this personally cos i am commenting just on your chance
of being signed, i'm not saying anything negative about your
music at all (i actually haven't heard any yet). i think
it's objective (ie: not just my opinion) to say that it's
not the creative or technical calibre of the artists on
warp.

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-07-30 08:02 [#00330256]
Points: 14042 Status: Lurker

well... how can you say "it's not the creative or technical
calibre of the artists on warp." when right before you
said "i actually haven't heard any yet" ???

and I doubt ill be signed... but nothing ever happened by
not doing anything.

And who knows... maybe the artists will just give it a
listen and let me know thier thoughts.

and btw... demos usually dont have more then 3-4 songs on
them

because of what you've just described above AND the fact
that you haven't been making music that long. i can assume,
but not know for sure, that it's also inferior to artists
such as aphex twin and boards of canada because you're only
19 and have only finished a single year of music school.

i'm not saying your music sucks, i haven't heard it as i
said. it could be amazing for all i know. but start small
cos warp seriously are not going to give you a chance and
you're foolish to think otherwise. there are so many labels
in the world, why start with warp?

yeh you would be a fool to do nothing... doing nothing
obviousely achieves nothing.... so if they say no thow it at
them recod the noise it make sample it and make a song from
it :)

ive been making for 5 years.

yeah, only one year of music college... but 2 years of
theory before that, and self taugh with equipment.

and age doesnt have anything to do with it.

if we are to beleive the dates on SAWI, afx made his stuff
when he was yuonger then 19

but yeah, i really doubt ill get signed...

but like i said, the artists could listen to it and let me
know thier thoughts

you never know. some people are down to earth and would take
time to do that.

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2002-07-30 08:12 [#00330273]

One thing to watch out for, is if they hear your early demo,
and decide they dont like it, they might end up skipping
later demos baised on you name alone.

Altho titsworth, thats not totally true. As far as I know
Chris Clark had nothing published before warp ran his album.

i dont think that would be the case

i think they are smarter then that

people develop

to throw away demos i send them like 2 years from now, based
on a vauge recollection of not liking my stuff from 2 years
before... it just wouldnt make sense

and BoC supposedly reapetedly sent demos to warp, one after
another

worked for them

afx may have started recording music at age 14 but he wasn't
signed to warp until he made SAW2. warp are a business, they
don't sign nobodies (again, no offense to you personally).

i'm NOT suggesting not trying to get your music out there to
labels. i'm suggesting the opposite.. but just start
smaller. don't waste a cd-r on warp, they're not interested
(right now). if you designate the next 5 years to your music
alone and develop a fanbase (including admiration from other
labels and professional musicians) then warp will consider
it.

yes i understand completly what you are saying

but im not sending it to the "demo" section at warp studios
in London

im giving em to the artists.

if they have time, they can listen, and give me advice

or they can throw it away... but id feel better with myself
knowing that I attempted to get some sort of feedback

you a bit more seriously.

I wouldn't hold Warp up to this mythic status. There are
plenty of other labels around. I hate the way Warp has
become a brand name for 'quality' music or music that
commands our respect. There's no need to seek approval from
Warp dude. They aren't tastemakers.

They may not be the best people to distribute your music.
I'm not saying don't send demos to them but try other labels
too. There's no point in putting up barriers for yourself.
Then again you could always start your own label. Good luck
anyway mate.

acctually... i am starting my own label...

but its not gonna be sold in stores... its gonna be a self
run internet thing...

and i know warp isnt the only one... i never said it was...
there are lots of others id like to send demos to...

...but im goin to this concert on wednesday... thats all
warp artists... so im gonna give them some demos.

if other labels where there, id give them my stuff as well.

and again, i DONT THINK THIS WILL GET ME SIGNED. im doing it
to get feedback from artists

Fair enough. But why do you believe Warp artists could give
you any more valid an opinion than the man in the street or
one of us for that matter? It sounds like idol worship or
the cult of personality.

write some of your best music tricks (like snare-rush or
knobtweaks) down on paper. And pull out a paper from a hat
to get a random approach. When you think it's too random,
then continue it yourself....

why not someone on the street?

because this is what these guys do. they write IDM.

they have a closer connection with it then just a listener.
they can look at it differently

and why is it that everytime i post something simple, i
always get like flamed with all these kind of attacking

the thread started out as me just frusterated at the moment,

Because if you are still doing that whole light-saber avatar

desparate men in an aphex twin messageboard, how are you

not just that but just how things have gone for you on this

um... playing around?

i dont really think its a big deal

its an internet chat board... its not like im taking press
photos and sending them to record companies with the
lightsaber

just messing around, cause im bored

here is this better?

but if something as stupid as a lightsaber will turn them
away, then its the last thing to worry about... instead id
think theyd be paying more attention to all the stuff ive
written when im bored

and tits, so these warp people are regulars? because theyd
have to be to remember Zeus from the messege boards

Best bet for getting your music listened to?

Burn 100 CD-Rs, write your email addy on them with a marker,
throw them (frisbee style) on stage during one act. A few
will break, lots will be scratched, you will be thrown out.
However, the artist will be so interested that they will at
least listen to the cd...
