The weather in the UK this summer has been fucking appalling, particularly up here in the North. We've had a LOT of rain, very little sunshine and it has been really quite cold. I'm often having to wear a hat and sweatshirt, and it's fucking July, man! Every year, the weather seems to become stranger. We're always hearing on the TV that some record has been broken, like "this was the wettest April on record" or whatever. Most experts agree that we have entered a period of climate change. And many agree that this has been caused or at least precipitated by global warming, brought about as a result of human activities. I did a degree in Environmental Science, so I've learnt about all this! Parts of the world will become warmer and drier, others will become wetter and colder. What we are experiencing in the UK is a greater homogeneity in weather conditions between the seasons: i.e. warmer, wetter winters, and colder, wetter summers. Rainfall is increasing. I mean, look at all these floods that keep happening in the Autumn in the UK. The increase in rainfall is probably caused by an increase in water in the atmosphere brought about as a result of the melting of the polar ice caps. This obviously results in an increase in precipitation and cloud cover - more clouds in winter = warmer, wetter weather. More cloud cover in summer = colder, wetter weather. It means we don't get a proper summer or winter anymore. It's never that cold for very long, and it's never that warm for very long. And it's certainly never dry for all that long. They predict that the situation is going to escalate and get a lot worse. Shite. And it's even more worrying when major polluters like the USA rubbish the global warming theory, pull out of the Kyoto Protocol and vow to continue polluting. BOYCOTT companies that don't carry environmentally friendly products. VOTE for parties with a good environmental agenda. AMERICANS - get BUSH to see SENSE. I can't believe how few people take environmental issues seriously. The environment is what we LIVE in. If we don't look after it, then we shoot ourselves in the foot. So take action! And tell others to do the same! Otherwise, basically, we are going to be pretty fucked. |

I am serious. I mean, I am a bit sarcastic every time someone "discovers" that our environment is being degraded/ fucked up because of capitalism and offers boycott as an answer because I've seen so much of it being a part of the punk scene etc. But in essence, I support your opinion. Capitalism is the sole reason our planet is being destroyed. It should be stopped. |

Cool man. Obviously, it's something that annoying hippies seem to rattle on about rather too often. But, as I said before, I can't believe how few otherwise sensible and intelligent people seem to take environmental issues seriously. I think it boils down to a "it won't happen in my lifetime" attitude, which in itself is selfish and frankly disgusting. But it's also incorrect, because environmental degradation is occurring all around us all of the time. And, unless serious action is taken, this global warming thing is going to seriously FUCK people's lives up in the coming decades. Mark my words...... |

And it's not just about having a crap, wet summer. In developing countries, agricultural systems will be so badly affected by climate change that huge famine is likely to occur, on a scale never seen before. And of course, rising sea-levels are going to leave millions or billions without homes. The world is already overpopulated, imagine what it will be like when there is even less land to live on! |

good topic :) I have also studied climate change, manic . politicians tend to operate on the basis> only take any action if> 1) it benefits big business 2) it saves/generates money short/medium term 3) 90%+ of the public are *demanding* change seeing as 1) and 2) are not going result from stopping dirty fossil fuel emissions and the like; 3) is the only option, and as usual most people bury their heads in the sand. Unfortunately, it seems most people will argue that its GOOD that we get more cloud, because then we're less likely to get skin cancer as a result of the reducing ozone-layer..... :/ most people seem to genuinely enjoy justifying and reinforcing ignorance , it almost sounds 'clever'. And they use one impending calamity (like global warming) to justify accelerating our disregard for the planet. "Our planet is fucking up; so lets get what we can out of it before its too late".. instead of actually taking responsibility. The US is still the biggest sulphur emitter in the world. I think they're a bit more active on it in the US It's either US or Oz where they have seperate bins for the dustmen for trash and stuff for recycling. Most things are cfc free now too, it's those damn farts that do it !! |

It would indeed be a good idea if family's were only allowed one or two children. Overpopulation is our main problem. There are far too many people in the world and we can't sustain exponential population growth for much longer. We should genetically modify people so they can only produce one or two kids. |

And, what Loogie said about 3rd world countries: not only they should reject the idea of "industrial development = social progress" but the "post-industrial " countries should also be made to drop that capitalist crap and return to "simple" lifestyle, production-style and all. It would be discriminative to just tell 3rd world countries that they should restrain themselves from technological development. Unfortunately, the nature of capital inevitably pushes the development of technologies based on the best resource/ income rate rather than on environment/ people/ nature freindly basis. |

BTW, on that "overpopulation" issue: have any of you thought about the fact that in countries with largest population growth they spend the least money per capita and vice versa. It's the natural mechanism: the poor reproduce much in order to meet high death rates and the fact that their main economy resource is cheap labour. So, if "the west" would like to solve this problem, they should rather re-direct part of their wealth in order to increase standard of living in third world countries instead of trying to set population control programs that appeal to these people to have less children. It's hypocritical and racist. |

Loogie: yes you can. That's one of the oldest natural mechanisms: high death rates/ vulnerability of young specimens always account for high birth rates. Even in micro systems: in Serbia where I live, more developed parts have negative population growth as opposed to underdeveloped ones. On the capitalism issue: I don't really care for the internet, CD's, computer games, TV shows etc. I mean, all those things make my life more, er, fun, but I do not consider them essential. It's just that I'm used to them, but I don't rate them higher than living a simple life of, say having a piece of land you work hard on, having folk songs and myths and rituals that consist a living culture (as opposed to dead "traditional" culture) and having a religion that actually you practice every time at every place. The fact that I' d find it extremely hard to get used to this lifestyle/ culture is not important, I know that it's healthier for the environment and society in general, so I am not going to rate my personal preferences above reason/ logic/ whatever. |

Suddenly the lights went out and there was a noise and you could just see one of the boys going across the stage, he quite clearly hit another boy and ran quietly back to his place, when the light came on, everybody was where they had been a few seconds earlier when the lights went out, but one boy had a bleeding nose and a tearful face! The light revealed the problem! The lad who had done the hitting was looking sheepish and had a face that was flushed red with embarrassment! The light revealed the truth! We are in the world, to witness to the new life that we have in Christ Jesus and through life demonstrate to others the love, grace and truth that this new life brings. |
