i just had this huge argument/discussion with my dad

he said this electronic music is all noise.
And why should i be at a music school if alls im doing is
making noise. and that it takes no talent to make this
music

i tried to remain clam and explain it to him

he still didnt get it

Hey, not all people dig electronic music. To say that it
takes no talent to produce is ridiculous though. But sure,
you could probably get a lot of fans if you wrote duff "punk
rock/emo" songs (i.e. Jimmy Eat World; Weezer; Sum 41; Blink
182).

heh, i get in fights like that with me friends and just
genral idiots who pass through the store. (they buy a fuckin
sackload of Kenny G albums and they tell me I listen to
shit?) ah well, fuck em, you know your right and thats all
that matters.

yeah

my dad asked "who listens to this?"

and i was like "lots of people"

and he was like "what percent"

and i was like "how am i supposed to know that?"

but he said its annoying and asked me what the music was
trying to express

(we were listening to track 3 of confield) and i told him
its not just one emotion

i compared it to painting. You have art that is like, a
picture of a garden.
very straight forward

but then you have dali, and monet etc, and what is it? well,
im not sure exactly, but its pleasing, it has emotion and
deepth

his basic response was "ehhh"

well, i told him that there is obviously a market for it

i mean, cds are made, record labels make exclusivly this
type of music
people gig

etc

i tried to compare it to him...

he likes rock n roll, and i said i bet his parents thought
rock n roll was noise, and i said it was the same thing, its
just a different generation

your parents didnt like rock, but it doesnt mean its not
music, it just has a different meaninh to you then it does
to them

but he just said "but this is just noise"

and i was like "DID YOU NOT GET THE POINT OF THIS
ANALAGY?!?!?!"

uhg

zeus, i think showing him confield would be the most
inacessible electronic music to show an outsider to it,
maybe besides venetian snares (for its downright violence)
show him some plaid, boc, i'm sure you can find something he
might like a bit

yeh... mabie a bit of bogdan BOC or Autechre..... if he
doesn't understand then... just spash his face into the
sterio system several times so he can tell the difference
between noise and IDM...

well, i'm not suprised he thought it was just unlistenable
noise, you let him listen to confield. it's for more
"advanced" IDM listeners. Even I don't really appriciate the
autechre sound very well at this stage, maybe i never will.

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-07-23 06:55 [#00320847]

yeah, but he also hates BoC, and Aphex Twin, and
Squarepusher

except for a very few ambient peices...then he calls it new
age, which also pisses me off!

no offense but your dad probably thinks you're gay. i mean,
from an outsider's perspective, only fags and supposedly
heterosexual artsy-fartsy types listen to IDM. if you really
care what your dad thinks of the music you listen to, just
pretend you like rock too and he won't give you a hard time
for liking "noise" on top of that. personally i couldn't
give a fuck what my family thinks of what i listen to, but
that's me.

no he doesnt think im gay

and im not gonna lie about what i like

i just wish he could see it from my point of view

I love the track Gantz Graf! And the video rocks too.

Zeus, if your Father thinks most IDM is just noise then play
BoC's Magic Window for him :)

I guess it would be very frustrating being in a postion like
that (trying to convince someone that 'IDM' is much more
than awful noise.)

When your Father ask's who listen's to this music, why not
show him messages from this message board or tell him how
many members are here!

To Zeus' Father:

Hi! I love 'IDM' and listen to it all the time. It can be
very beautiful and emotional at times, or scary and
disturbing or even funny. You don't have to like the music,
just atleast except that a lot of people love this music.
Bye!

=)

"Resident Evil....why do you like it??"

Hmmm... I don't know! It's different and weird. I don't
know, I just love the sound to it. I got a great feeling
listening to it.
