ok, this is a question for the other music makers here

I want to start doing gigs...

but I write all my songs on Reason, and thats it. I dont
have any hardware.

How would you guys suggest I go about performing live?

I cant just push play of an mp3... hehe

thoughts anyone?

Mix it up a bit. Improvise with all of the sliders, fx, etc.
My friend does it all the time. Some nights, he'll come over
to my house and we'll make some stuff right off the top of
our heads. I throws in all kinds of stuff. He uses Reason
too, btw.

but how much real time control can you get with just a
mouse?

its limiting isnt it?

buy a synth you can load with new samples from your songs,
play them live that way if you're not going to form a band

Write all of your tracks to MP3. Then DJ live with a laptop
and Traktor. You can throw in other people's tracks too.

Kaoss Pad is fun. I do agree, it is uncomfortable to stand
up to a crowd and press play. Let's face it - it will be
difficult to put on a live 'performance' when you're a
one-man act.

If you can play sections live, against a backing track, then
try that. Traktor is pretty good, as you can
loop/filter/scratch your music up a bit, then stick it
through a Kaoss Pad (even two) for some extra tweakage.

This is all I've done live so far. Seemed to work well
enough.

when i get back to school ill def check it out.

and as far as traktor goes.. so what, id have like mp3s of
my already made songs, and then fuck with them and mix
them?

or would I take a song, and save the seperate parts as mp3s,
and then mix them together via traktor?

im still not sure i understnad exatcly what you do with
traktor

Zeus, I had this same question a while back, and ended up
doing this:

Two laptops, both running cubase and ableton live. Used my
old midi keyboard as a midi input, and DJed tracks back and
forth between computers. While one was playing a song, I'd
use the keyboard with cubase and a vst sampler to do
everything from adding samples and playing some wacky melody
that was never there before. It works really well.

im looking for a somewhat cheap, and near future answer

and is it really nessasary to have 2 comps?!

for all of you who ran/have run linux, best live approach
is:
cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp
clear the room like a cop bust.

Hold your laptop in your hands, and jump around the stage
like a madman! Pretend you're doing something, and fucking
with knobs and sliders, but really you're just bouncing to a
pre-done track. Hump your laptop. Lick your laptop. Throw it
and catch it. Make love to it. Tango with it. Dance the
night away. Spin it around. Juggle it. Kick it like a
hackeysack. Bang it on your head. Kiss it. Love it. Do it.
Make that fucker scream. Swing it around by it's cords (make
sure they're extra long so you can move around and do
everything I'm telling you).

Then throw it into the audience at the end, much like Lars
Ulrich throws his drumsticks! Give a lucky listener
something to remember your performance by! It helps to be
filthy rich so you can afford lots of laptops.

No no, better YET... light in fire... an IDM Hendrix! Make
like The Who and smash it up. Eat it. Eat the circuitry.
Show the motherboard who's the boss.

WORK IT!!! WORKKKKKK ITTTT!!!

that would be cool man

except i do like boards of canada, autechre, ambeint afx
kinda stuff

not something you jump around to (like squarepusher or
something)

so I dont think it would work

but it would be funny to hump the lap top

hehe

as far as laptops go... PC or MAC?

I use an iMAC... not a laptop...

so im thinking... i put all the seperate tracks from a song
on thier own mp3 files, and mix them in traktor, so its
spontanious etc? doing effects etc?

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-07-23 00:46 [#00320468]
Points: 14042 Status: Lurker

yeah, i could use a kaoss... need more $ first!

a live improv on reason?

dont know about that... could get messy :)

offline Quoth from Sweden on 2002-07-23 00:49 [#00320471]
Points: 3840 Status: Lurker

here is what i do...

my big fockin computer + a lot of extra goodies including my
Roland Juno 60 + my Boss DR-202

when i REALLY perform live, i mix my voice tapes to a
delay & alter pitch & play my ambient keyboard stuff.

works quite well... very diverse set list that i have :)

do not be shy about using hardware, as you can find REALLY
cheap stuff at a garage sale and be able to mix it into your
sound.

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-07-23 00:50 [#00320472]
Points: 14042 Status: Lurker

yeah

ive just never really done any type of live stuff or improv
with my music

its all written out, and thought out...

offline Quoth from Sweden on 2002-07-23 00:52 [#00320473]

so.. you don't consider yourself sort of cheating when you
improv? jazzers do it all the time, why can't electro headz?

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-07-23 00:55 [#00320477]
Points: 14042 Status: Lurker

wiat what?

cheating?

i know jazz does improv, and so does electronic dudes do

im just saying ive never done it, and i dont know how id
start

you gotta have something prepared somewhat... you cant just
start with one track of something you quickly make

id realy like to do this... but then the other problem is
like... hands on-ness

if im just using a comp, i dont think a mouse would be fast
enough for real time control

check out Midiman's MIDI controllers... you hook those bad
boy things up... & with Reason you can assign the midi outs
& ins & then just like tweek the sound again & again until
you end up creaming your pants.

well shit dude... bust out that old sp-202 & start just
twiddling and mess with a drum machine & just get a nice
little keyboard line (written out) of coz & just tweek like
mad! :)

offline Zeus from San Francisco (United States) on 2002-07-23 01:02 [#00320491]
Points: 14042 Status: Lurker

but im selling you the sp-202!

hehe

i mean, i do have equipment, but im selling it...

i wasnt too happy with the sounds on the drum machines and
synth

so you can get like a midi control... and that could control
all the effects and shit on reason?

No offense to anyone that does live electronic music, but
I've never gave a shit about it, I wouldn't even be overly
excited to see and hear Richard live. The ''tweaking'' I've
heard in live electronic tracks by Rich or Tom or whoever
have always made me think... ''eh... that sucked''. But
damn, their music is fucking great when it's playing in my
room, pre-cooked to perfection.

Just my preference of course... not saying live electronics
isn't cool, it just isn't cool to ME. I can understand why
Rich doesn't perform live very often... he's no Pete
Townshend!

yeah... i'll try to find you a link to a picture about what
i'm talking of...

a company called MIDIMAN makes VERY nice & cheap controllers
for certain computer things... like a built in effects board
& such... i've been wanting to buy one, but i don't have the
money... it's considered hardware in my books, coz it's
"hands-on"

*I will send you a check for that sp-202*
*I am STILL VERY INTERESTED*

the audience has to be able to SEE what you are doing. If
youre twiddling knobs and they cant see what the knob
twiddling is doing its boring. If youre playing in a
restaurant or something tios ok, but if you want people to
actually be listening to you and watching you make sure you
are playing a keyboard/guitar/dildo/trumpet/spoons.

im gonna go check out that midi controller stuff...

they are just keyboards...

how would i be albe to tweak knobs? like delay, flanger,
