Okay I was reading the "Rate Do You Know Squarepusher"
thread and I noticed that this track is a cover. A cover of
what? I didn't know. After searching around on the
Internet I found it was Joy Division.

I've never heard this song before? Was it big in the UK or
something? The Squarepusher version sucks so hard I may
have to boycott him until the next World Cup.

Yeah i like that track!
I haven't heard the original i think?
Pushers voice is really low in the mix , almost as he is shy
or something.

not that old... :-P

an amazing Joy Division cover is NIN's cover of Dead Souls

Karma To Burn also did one... '24 Hours' is on their debut
album...

Personally the only thing I can stand related to Joy
Division is the remix of New Order's 'New Faith'... great
video too!

this isn't the most original cover i've ever heard - the
percussion seems to consist of a ride/crash cymbal fusion
played over

I feel i can comment as i once was a huge Joy division/New
Order 'fan' in my youth (I am now the proud age of 62).The
track in question made the UK top 20,in 1980(just shortly
after singer Ian Curtis' suicide in May 1980).It also hit a
similar chart position an rerelease in 1983.It was also
remixed in 1995,hitting the 30's.Covers have been made by
Paul Young,The Swans,U2 amongst others.My favourite being
Stanton-Miranda on the JD covers album(which also included
Moby).}:>

even better? shit, it's more or less just an emulation of
the original - at least in the original ian curtis was
singing from his own songsheet, tragic as it was

As a fan of both Joy Division and Squarepusher, I can
objectively say that the cover is terrible. It's cool that
he covered it, but I think he should've done it more in his
style. Perhaps more drum and bass, more vocal effects, stuff
like that.

Paul Young did a fantastic cover of this peice in the
eighties. very tasteful. mr. curtis was too moody to really
understand this work.

I'll probably get my ass kicked for this...but i think
Therapy's cover of Isolation was pretty good...Their version
of Husker Du's Diana was pretty good too

NIN's version of "Dead Souls" is probably the best cover of
Joy Division i've heard. Bush does a pretty neat cover of
"In a Lonely Place"

If you want to hear Joy Division cover someone else, check
out "Sister Ray" off of their 'Still' disc, it's pretty
good.

"mr. curtis was too moody to really
understand this work." but Paul Youngs' cover really hit the
spot ? eh ???!!

Surely its a song about depression; seeing the black clouds
even from the summit of the hill, the all-pervading
bleakness of the emotions.
Curtis is THE man for the job. ATmosphere ... or Leaders of
Men are better examples of his melancholy/alienation though.

Paul Young????

He murdered that song!!!...I have a dream where I shit on
his head for defiling something sacred...
and one day that dream will come true...

Joy Div were a big part of my youth & to hear that spiky 80s
hasbeen cover it was sickening...

(and if you've never heard much Joy Div then get yourself to
SS...you are in for a big big treat!!!)...

all...

Whoa! I really liked that NIN track on the crow soundtrack.
I had no idea it was joy division's :)

I remember V/vm did a cover of love will tear us apart on
the 20th(?) anniversary of that guy from JD hanging himself.
Very tasteful.

Obviously no ones actually heard the Paul Young version I
was refering to, eh? No one remembers that before he started
his meds and began to sing his White Soul 80's sell-out, he
was a miserable and harsh song-writer equal to anything by
Tom Waits or Nick Drake. Ian Curtis rode his own mental
illness to the bank, and then jumped in (a la Jeff Buckley).
Love Will Tear Us Apart is his song, and his song only. New
Order will never play this song because of their respect for
Paul Young's rendition.

I'm listening to it now and I really like it, though I don't
think its anything amazingly different from the original.
But then, why should it be, if tom just left this unreleased
and we knew about it you just KNOW we'd be pining for it so
bad

as long as he doesn't start doing cher covers i'm happy

Joy Division were a fabulous band, they were around in the
late 70'd but split in 1980 when the lead singer Ian Curtis
hung himself. The remaining band members went on toi form
New Order. I think that song in particular was pretty big
when it was released, personally I love it ;)

joy division are amazing. i cosign with everyone who
complimented nin's cover of "dead souls". another great
cover is girls against boys' "she's lost control" (but to
get it i you have to already appreciate scott mcloud's
vocals i think). and as much as i disdain moby now i still
love his cover of "new dawn fades", my favorite JD song. his
whole singing style is modelled after ian curtis' voice.

i like the squarepusher cover because it's exactly not like
everyone expected. it's like a big fuck you to all of his
fans who won't except change :cough cough thirdball cough:
it's a genuinely good cover, my only peave is that he misses
the first love! it's supposed to go
love..... love will tear us apart...... again
but he sings it
............love will tear us apart...... again

rar! also i was so pleased he's covered this because it's
been stuck in my head for days at a time

I think it does a good job at covering it. You can feel the
atmosphere more, which makes for a good tribute, but its
nowhere near the original, which is one of my faves.

Ian Curtis' grave just says "Love will tear us apart."

It is in Macclesfield in Cheshire, not really worth a visit
but I used to live nearby.

I think Phobia0 needs to install a sarcastometer in xltronic
when it's up, 'cause things fly over people's head. I hope
no one wasted their time trying to track down the Paul Young
version.

If you did...

i'm so, so, very, very, sorry...i'm sorry

imho the best jd track ever is either Ceremony (only ever
heard live track on bootleg) or 24 Hours. Really like
Transmission but too many different takes to really decide
which is the real song...

Oh don't worry I'll except change, in fact I would love to
hear Tom produce something more aggressive and passionate -
but this is shite. Whiny vocals over boring production;
whatever this style of music is - sucks IMO

Count me amongst those dissappointed fans.

I hope he stops his "big fuck you to all of his fans who

The people who see his cover as whinny and sorryass are
obviously not in the know of the overall aesthetic JD were a
part of, so their reactions are understandable. The late
70s/ early 80s was a different time...
