I think that regarding melody, when you go from a lower key/note/pitch to a higher note, it gives an emotional feeling of happiness and outgoingness. On the other hand, if you go from a higher note to a lower one, it gives an emotional feeling of sorrow. This makes sense, because higher notes have more energy (closer sound wavelengths). THIS is why the music of my favorite mp3.com artist (www.mp3.com/imaginary) sounds so absurdly emotional, looking at things positively one second and negatively the very next second. It's like telling a story. Well either that or... uh, nevermind. |

the way i see it is a minor chord is sad and a major chord is happy. also, the black notes sound sad and the white notes sound happy. |

This is what I was taught, and I think it's true. The white notes generally sound happy, but playing white notes with the black ones can make a sinister, sad, or eerie tune. It can also be happy, like chariots of fire. Happy tune, played on both black and white notes. |

I never understood the purpose of the black and white keys. I thought it was to conserve space. (if they were all big white keys, the keyboard would stretch really long). I just try to ignore them, and pretend that the whole keyboard is a long row of keys, ignoring everything except the octaves. (C-4's sound good with C-5's etc.) It makes it difficult to play off the top of your head, the keys confuse me because of their seemingly idiotic layout. But if you sequence onto the computer, you can take all the time you need to find the next key. |
