So I just jumped on the Bitwig wagon. Anyone else doing
the bitwig?

It's a No from me but I'm sure somebody here knows what
you're talking about. I'll ask around.

i followed it with much interest for a bit, because, hey,
native linux support -- but it's written in java, i think,
and from what i've heard it's trying to be ableton but it
still has quite a way to go -- but this was like a year or
two ago; perhaps not current

in the end, i found out that renoise has native linux
support. i tried the demo, and it seems to more or less
work, aside from it ignoring the gdm volume setting and
blasting me pretty hard.

so, dunno, are you confining yourself to the glory of linux?
even if so, can you handle using a tracker? then perhaps
renoise. if you're windows/osx it seems like you should
probably just stick with ableton, but, again, maybe they've
advanced a lot in two years

i don't get why ppl make stuff like that Bitwig thing, and
a couple of other things
how do you manage to put the effort in to make something
that is like something else

like timelines and patch routing, ok , prb other stuff too,
not expecting to reinvent the wheel there - but they had to
make those things from scratch and they couldn't be bothered
really to think how they could be put together differently

i like a a few things on it more than ableton. The
modulators are pretty awesome and the grid is pretty insane.
I also use MPE which is implemented much better in Bitwig.

I will say i do wish I could use MAX with it. Max for live
is pretty awesome and i miss it when ever i use bitwig.

on the one hand -- you're building this from scratch. jesus
christ, why not fix some things?

on the other hand -- you're building this from scratch, and
that's already a lot.

the only reason i've ever been interested in bitwig is linux
support. windows is crap, and macs are increasingly crap
(about to get moreso with a messy ARM migration) and linux
is really all i want to deal with unless someone is signing
my paychex. so, "hey, yes, it's pretty much a clone of
ableton, but it'll run on linux" is actually not a horrible
value proposition, from where i sit.

that being said, last i tried to run it, well, i'm on arch,
not debian or ubuntu, and after a while trying to install
cross-linux package manager this and rebuild package that i
gave up.

renoise did much better. fired right up. but it blasted at
full volume, ignored system volume setting. i should try
that again, sort it out.

don't get me wrong, it's ace that there are more DAWs about
for Linux,
(and yeah, i only use me macbook [with singleboot debian] to
watch videos these days, lol)
it's like, there's a step before you sit down and start to
build things, that i think should last quite a bit longer
for most projects - like firstly, does something else do
this, and secondly ok, if something does, can we spend a bit
more time restructuring it into something a bit new...
(unless i am being paid) i don't see the point in doing
anything which hasn't got some frission of 'well, this
doesn't exist yet'
tho obviously, i am very glad that there are many many
opensource bods who labour away extensively and without much
thanks, to build stuff like Bitwig and perhaps more
importantly practically all the stuff i am using right now

HAVING said that - it is Totally Not A Good Idea that
something does like more than probably 2 things completely
newly... although i think i read that in a marketing manual
