haha, are the straight story or the elephant man not worthy
of a smidgen of praise? mulholland drive was baffling and i
didn't click with twin peaks, never seen eraserhead, blue
velvet i feel like i should try again with. i'm agnostic
with lynch

i assume his seminal work is just masturbatory fodder for
film students who think they can achieve the same success as
'eraserhead', which beyond it's hype, really is just a
disjointed student film. i hate anyone who looks into art
and "art" too much. sometimes it's nice to make weird
things.

"weird" has such a strictly defined vocabulary, it's not
weird at all usually. it's conventional

i've really only seen blue velvet once while not entirely
sober, but, with this pretext, i think david lynch is good
director man. aside from the plot which was totally,
utterly, clockwork orange fucked up, the directing had a
nice, solid miasma of dissociation; cleverly anticipating
your train of thot, letting a it run for a bit, then pulling
the rug out from under it. i'm a busy man, but i may have to
watch lost highway or some shit if we're ever to put this
matter to bed

In the last fortnight I've watched Twin Peaks in its
entirety from the Pilot to The Return. Last night I had a
bird over and she played Nina Simone's Sinnerman which
you'll remember from the closing of Inland Empire (one of
the best films ever made). I've watched Eraserhead countless
times because I like the atmos, Lynch himself said he'd like
to live in that world. Film studies has nothing to do with
it as far as I'm concerned. I'm waiting for it to get
cancelled because there are no "black voices telling their
stories" in it. During lockdown my creepy flat felt very
Lost Highway so I watched that again and unnerved myself.
I'll take the worst Lynch film over any book about Critical
Race/Gender Theory EVERY FUCKING TIME

David Lynch does suck but his movies are still entertaining
wank.

Entertaining: Twin Peaks, Inland Empire, Elephant Man, Lost
Highway

That’s a decent output tbf

Seriously though, is this a thing now, have the Cultural
MarxISMs turned on Lynch? Is he "problematic" because of bad
feels?

i'm glad someone else acknowledges inland empire as one of
the greatest films of all times though i'm not sure what
cultural marxism has to do with it!!
david seems like quite a nice guy even if the transcendental
meditation bit is a little weird.

"We want an invincible Germany! Invincible Germany" exclaims
the "Raja of Germany", dressed in a white robe and golden
little crown.
"What do you mean?" cries the audience. "Hitler wanted an
invincible Germany as well!"

"Yes, but unfortunately he didn't succeed!"

lol

Lynch

I’d say my favourite Lynch is likely Eraserhead but
haven’t seen it innyeeeaars. Go ahead and judge but I
didn’t manage to finish the new season of twin peaks.
Stopped at the “got a light” episode, which I quite
liked but then we just never went back to it. Suppose I
should??

i don't think lynch cares about an invincible germany or an
invincible university (whatever that means) but i thought he
was trolling about the transcendental meditation though now
i think it really works for him

I like how David Lynch has the balls to expose the
dark underbelly lurking beneath the 1950s American dream! No
one else ever does that!

I know you're trolling for the Lulz but no one has suggested
that "only" Lynch ever unearthed anything, and I don't think
the point about Blue Velvet is to suggest "hey, all this mad
shit be going on while y'all sipping milkshakes in the
white-owned diner"

This is what he brings out in people, this is the influence
he has on civilization. A politically destabilizing force
that steadfastly refuses to recognize the achievements of
BIPOC.

that... kind of... *is* the point...?! to juxtapose Dennis
Hopper and Dean Stockwell's world of nastiness against this
Archie Comics utopia of lawns and teens. It could have been
subtitled The Two Faces of Whiteness.

Akoywowa the Spider who made the Moon (over Africa), educate

seriously, the best thing about lynch is that he doesn't try
to pretend his works are anything more than various
arrangements of his particular fixations

> seriously, the best thing about lynch is that he doesn't

this is precisely why his unexamined presuppositions are so

is that a bad thing though

though when he is asked what his films are about he does say
they are visions of his and start talking about
transcendental meditation but i think that's just his way of
dodging explaining anything about the script
