I thought the eternity / inevitability thing was an
interesting framework for viewing things, and some other
people are saying similar things, like Pankaj Mishra in his
book Age of Anger. (highly recommended)

I don't think it's a unified field theory of modern history,
though. One thing Snyder really misses out on is class
analysis, which is frustrating because he brushes up against
it in the last chapter talking about inequality, and Putin
as a billionaire, and the oligarchy in Russia.

But if you extend this to class, it almost *does* provide a
unified field theory at least for current events - why are
right wing politicians, bordering on fascist, sweeping into
power everywhere? Why do they seem to be networking, but not
in ways that are substantially, unequivocably provable? It's
not because Trump is secretly Putin's puppet and so on like
the Hillary wine moms think (though Trump is obviously
terribly outclassed by Putin in intellect and strategy).

No, it's because billionaires around the world are
intuitively defending their shared class interests. Laissez
faire liberalism (inevitability, if you like) has failed,
and fascism (eternity) seems to be the other way that wealth
can defend itself from the people - through
authoritarianism, by getting them worked up about
foreigners, culture wars and so forth, lots of distractions.

One thing that's fun to watch - and by fun, I mean
terrifying - is how both the Democrats and Republicans are
falling into the trap of framing Ukraine as a problem,
providing Putin a pretext to step in and solve the problem.
You know, like he solved Syria.

Get ready for waves of politically destabilizing Ukrainian
refugees, Europe!

married a rich Chinese guy and had a baby with him. Doubt
she married for love though.
