excellent talk, very prescient. it's been maybe 6 or 7 years since i actually had a pc to be concerned about when it comes to dogshit DRM etc... only got a phone now but i am sucking satan's cock with every app coming from the play store, books from audible or the kindle app, music on youtube's spotify clone and it goes on. life kinda got in the way of keeping up with developments at the digital frontier and now i just love that salty satan taste, mmm yum |

yes, this, more or less, is why i have assiduously avoided "appliance" computers. you have zero control over what's going on. it's particularly odious with alexa, etc. where it's an entire software stack designed to get you to buy more shit, jammed down your throat. i've used linux as my home OS since 2014 or so (and was running it on at least half of everything since 2012). you can go out and pay $35 for a new-gen raspberry pi that has the horsepower of a low-end desktop. if you have your ear to the ground, it's thoroughly possible to bypass all this horseshit. most people do not have their ear to the ground i've only watched a bit under half of this, will watch the rest once i go out to the store |

man. this is 2011 -- before streaming, the cloud, were huge. hence, it misses this whole aspect: rather than worry about locking down user systems, just keep everything behind a walled garden server. execute it remotely; not even give anyone the chance to reverse-engineer it drive CPU power into the cloud, and get control of it... |

It's cool that pro audio software is finally coming to Linux - Bitwig, Reaper, the U-he synths, hopefully more will follow. I doubt NI will port Reaktor anytime soon so if I want to keep using that I'm stuck with either Mac or Windows, and Windows is malware / spyware. For now I'll grit my teeth and pay the Apple tax because Mac OS is basically Unix with a pretty face, and they still have decent privacy policy for users - their business model is an old fashioned one that involves customers paying for goods and services, rather than customer-info-as-a-product. And they're not making moves to lock down Macs like iPhones and iPads. That'd be suicide, it'd knife their pro and developer base. |
