i'd just like to double-down in recommending this fatboy slimterview for which i actually went to the effort of making up a bullshit email address so i could sign up with their other site and watch the rest. the interviewer is obviously a twat when it comes to understanding music tech, but he makes up for it by knowing way more musical history than i do. highlights a much more thorough tour of the studio where he made all this stuff, and it is so lovely. acid-yellow walls, a giant view out the ocean. i've seen a corner of it in previous vids, but there was a lot more to see. like a giant collage wall, where he's posted photos and cutouts and bits of obscene hand-written notes... i did the same thing myself for a few years it's a pretty clear answer, though: he's been a DJ for about 40 years, and grandmaster flash was what made him want to be a DJ instead of a punk rocker. took him three years, he says, to figure out how to do the same thing. eventually, the sampler came along, and he loved it -- suddenly, you didn't need to have two copies of a record to keep the break going. so, his move to the sampler was a very direct evolution of DJing. on the flip side, he already knew production. he knew music theory, chords, etc. in a way that most DJs did not. and he'd discovered the sampler meanwhile, he had his club, "the big beat boutique." one night, he played the skiffle song that's all the guitars in rockefella skank, and people went nuts. "that's the 900 number, i thought" he said, referring to a song that became a mild hit based off of looping a saxaphone solo for three minutes my questions about "how do you approach panning" remain, but between this and the other vid someone posted, i feel like i have a clearer picture now. |
