that is very depressing, I guess that's why afx keeps his stuff in ammo boxes, but I always worry about the condition of those cassettes every year they degrade a bit more : ( |

it's a bit schizophrenic. i have a compulsive archivist streak. somewhere, on multiple redundant drives, i have the first emails i ever sent via a terminal on a vax 11/750 in, like, 1990 or something. there have been some minor data disasters, but i've more or less maintained a complete archive of my digital existence for almost thirty years. i'm a packrat; i have trouble throwing things out. i've had to come up with strategies -- like, if there's some widget i know i should jettison, but i can't quite manage it... i'll take a bunch of photos, so at least i'll have the photos, and that makes it easier to get rid of. physical stuff is like that, but data is easier to lug around.... meanwhile, one day, i'll be gone, and perhaps people will care about my writings or my musics or my code, but that meticulously maintained archive of my whole life will probably not be of much interest and fade away with my soul. |

yes im like that, I enjoy archiving and Collecting and ordering stuff, its satisfying, I don't think my archive of stuff is as well maintain as what yours appears to be, but I have stuff going back many years |

my father and i were both habitual super-long email writers. we never really had the patience to organize the phone, we didn't get together too much, but miles of deep discussion happened over email. lots and lots of people have commented that he was a talented writer; that his emails were great. after he died, i very carefully grabbed most of his hard drives and backups. i have, essentially, all of the emails he wrote. i've had this lingering idea to pump it all into a neural network text-generator and setting it up so people can email my dad again. sort of a digital homunculus. |

i had tiny elvis for about ten minutes, that shit was annoying re: archives of shit, i backed up all the texts i got from a stalker / occasional girlfriend when i was 15-19, had pages and pages of them stored as a word document on my old pc. dunno what's creepiest, the text bombing or compulsive logging of it. inevitably though i turned it into an Art Project, poseur ponce that i am |
