Afx mode

According to afx soundcloud, the novation bass station ii
synth is getting a new afx mode software update. No idea
what that means.

"******* I’ve been working on a collaboration with
Novation to make a new KILLER, KILLER update for the Bass
Station2 *******
AFX mode.
They have implemented the idea brilliantly, it’s in
addition to the microtuning that we put in[also added to
Peak[one of the best implementations on any synth]], we have
pushed this machine to it’s limits.
This affordable synth is now in the top3 of my ALL time
favourites !
It’s totally dope, you can now take it in radically
different directions, hope you like it.
Big respect to Novation!"

Wow. Given his collaboration with Korg on the Monologue it
seems like this could actually be true. BS2 just got a big
firmware update recently despite being a pretty old bit of
gear. If they're dropping another game-changing firmware on
it now and it really does take the synth into unprecedented
territory like the quote suggests, I'd certainly be
interested in playing with one.

Also, it's really strange seeing Rich go from being a
mysterious, taciturn troll for decades to such a genuine and
happily transparent synth nerd in the public eye as of late.
I love it, but it's strange.

It's great that he's pushing hardware companies to embrace
alternate tunings. It's so easy to do in software with max
or reaktor or pure data or whatever, but impossible with
most hardware or else requires silly workarounds using pitch
bend

I agree but it's pretty fucking shitty that it takes a rich
white male to finally get something about this done.
Hindustani classical musicians have been clamoring for
microtuning on the Bass Station 2 for years

real wasted opportunity for an RDJ cameo in that vid!

i played around with a NBS just recently for the first time.
its an awesome synth. but this afx mode is a turnoff. every
synth that gets an afx mode is a nono for me. i rather find
my own way to mircotuning if i need to

what, isn't it just that it can load scl or tun tables? or
does it do more, like the forbidden yellow demo button on
old consumer keyboards

lol ye.
novation peak and korg monologue/minilogue XD also let you
create custom tunings on the hardware itself by pressing a
key then turning a knob to change the pitch.

not sure how the convenience here is a big no no but enjoy
convulsed fuck-y work arounds i guess?

oh that's silly... would have made more sense to turn a knob
to divide the octave into different numbers of pitches. Just
manually detuning individual notes by ear is nonsense

dadonck is it because microtuning is not cool anymore when
afx mode does it for you?!

AGREED 100% that would be good.
i remember seeing youtube video of uTune eurorack doing that
for CV out. being able to create patches pretty much how
you're describing. designating divisions.

by ear is still fun though. i like to change every note to C
for example, and then go from there trying to make a scale.
export into other synths. it's nonsense, but it's not
without merit. i imagine it's similar to when you're using
an analogue synth like korg ps-3300, only you get to export
the tuning as a scala file and import into other synths :-)

but yes, other options would be VERY good.

novation peak has a screen + polyphony. maybe that'll get an
ultra afx mode??

"only you get to export the tuning as a scala file and
import into other synths "

What what what? Oh that's pretty cool. Didn't know it could
export a standard format. That changes the picture.

One of the coolest built in tuning tools in a synth is the
one in Absynth. I don't think it does standard formats. But
it's easy to make a custom octave division and have it
repeat across the key range.

well, thats how afx does it, which is great. for afx. its
also great that more machines get micro tuning options don't
get me wrong.

"in addition to the microtuning […] we have pushed this
machine to it’s limits"

if its true, there will definitely be more than that, which
will be cool stuff. it just wouldn't inspire me.

yes, i have synths and effects because i heard them in
tracks from artists i like. and i like what they do. but i
just don't need an afx (touched) synth, or a Jimi Hendrix
guitar although these people definitely influence how
engineers build instruments. i mean without musicians like
Richard Devine some modules from make noise, mutable
instruments, noise engineering wouldn't exist. its great
that there is more communication than ever between artists
and engineers.

but i rather buy an old crappy "synth" like a farfisa, or a
rack effect for 30 bucks because everybody uses pedals these
days or use a "cheesy" iOS app and discover things that i
like from those machines. you could call that an illusion,
definitely. but it would be hard for me to "discover"
something from a synth that has afx presets on it

whatever works for you, definitely !

the afx tunings on the monologue can't be exported as well,
unlike how i was saying the custom tunings you make can be
exported. so they're pretty much demo only purposes.

>>>It's so easy to do in software with max

That's the thing, in the software you mentioned pitches are
expressed typically as midikeys 0 128, and doing microtuning
is as simple as saying 65.23423 instead of 65 or whatever,
BUT there is no reason why hardware synths shouldn't allow
this either - it's 'just' the interface ... it's the
fixation upon the white+black keys of the chromatic keyboard
interface which I think this comes from in the first place
and i think is what does Afx's + others head in

even on a guitar you can tune the strings any which way you
want - why on earth wouldn't you want that ability on a
piano, if it's possible??

brother nah... he got the motherfucker tuned the way it was
supposed to be tuned... he got the motherfucker tuned
straight like a real motherfucker do

his hearing probably attenuated his music, also I reckon cos
his piano was made of a specific wood it had its own unique
harmonics and stuff so cant of been perfect, but I know what
you mean, interesting thought

It mixes stuff up doesn't it, it's disruptive. A piano is
tuned like a piano and that is that - well, not any more
matey! Guitars have always been a different world cos they
are very much cheaper to buy, although that is nothing to do
with the fact you can change the tuning, but bolstered by
it..

does seem a bit of a waste to limit yourself to a narrow
band of frequencies, but its really hard to get out of that
mind set cos all music is pretty much within those self
imposed parameters, veering off sounds initially wrong, so I
guess you have to stick with it, ive messed around with none
western scales and stuff but not microtuning

i'd spend my lunch breaks in guitar center, and i always
loved the novation synths. the supernova II; i've wanted one
forever. never wound up getting one. i did used to use the
novation v-station a heck of a lot, back, like,
when i still had a windows computer and VSTs. there was a
deeply trippy moment where, after a year or two of using the
v-station as a plugin, i visited a friend in college. they'd
pooled all their music gear in a giant common room, and
someone had a novation k-station, the hardware version of a
plugin i knew inside and out

I enjoyed the bass station 2 when i owned one. one of the
best bang for buck synths even before the updates. calling
it the bass station has always done it a disservice.
