So they just elected this ultra right with fascist guy who
explicitly said he will take people for one way helicopter
rides like Pinochet, I understand they have had a feckless
corrupt government for a while but this is like punching
yourself in the face after breaking a tea cup

It's just the saaaame fucking thing over and over.
Neoliberalism delivers enormously unequal outcomes, the vast
majority of people's actual material circumstances are not
improved despite a lot of nice rhetoric, and enough people
turn to nationalist fascism out of anger and desperation
for... a nationalist fascist to step in.

I mean, he's not going to improve things either, but it
doesn't matter at that point. He's an effective channel for
people's rage, and he satisfies that criterion admirably.

All he has to do is dehumanize and subjugate scapegoats,
often the same ones neoliberalism was paying lip service to.
Wealth can continue to flow upwards - at an accelerated
rate, even - which is not a bug but a feature; more
dissatisfaction means more anger which can be channelled
usefully.

yeah an eternal clusterfuck, neo liberalism allows these
opportunists to step in and promise the earth, the
environment is ripe for this sort of regressive backlash

democracy has a fatal flaw in that people tend to vote
against their own direct interests because of manipulation
in the information age. I particularly dislike this guy
because he said he is going to deforest the amazon
rainforest, he is one of those religious fundamentalists
that believe god gives us a infinite bounty and it will be
replenished by his whim.

"people tend to vote against their own direct interests
because of manipulation in the information age"

Well, that's part of it recently but a small part of it IMO.
Populist strongmen have come to power without Facetube
gaming people's feeds for a long time before now.

He's evangelical so he's probably that weird blend of
antisemitic conspiracy theory and pro-Zionism you find in
bonkers Christians - only supports Israel so it can fulfill
prophecy and be destroyed when Jesus returns. A lot of
American Republicans are like that.

That's to be expected. IMO Judaism is the true religion, so
I feel sorry for those Christians and their confusions. Have
you ever seen photographs of the Supreme Court of Israel?
There's a section with a cross that you have to walk over to
progress. Trampled cross, trampled on Christianity, meaning
that Jewish law will triumph over the teachings of Jesus
Christ.

I voted for Labour but I support some British conservatives
too as I much prefer our system to fascism. Shutting down
museums and university leftists is OTT and lame. I see the
advantages Britain has or had were an adversarial
parliament, magna carta, habeus corpus, jury trial,
presumption of innocence, Merchant Navy, the Royal Navy, our
monarchy (which keeps things politically stable). If we
lose these things we will be Britain in name only. I could
imagine a leftist seeing these things as fascist, racist,
hateful, etc.

Yes, leftists demand absolute power for kings and cops,
which is why we hate the magna carta and habeas corpus.

rd: we all learned the bible stories in school innit. noah
building the ark, moses parting the sea, david beating
goliath, etc. im not so familiar with the writings of the
prophets or the psalms.

fm: i mean the EU was wiping this stuff out. leftists
support EU membership, which goes against everything in my
little list.

I don't know about you but I think the Old Testament is
literally true.

The New Testament is like a historical document of the times
Jesus Christ lived in. Jesus was tried under Jewish law and
found to have committed some crime or other, so they had him
tortured by the Romans legally under Roman law

The New Testament was kind of suspicious to me because of
its brevity when compared with the Old Testament.

Here's a part of the bible that sticks in my mind. It
describes torture against the enemies of King David and the
Israelites.

in mind the bible is a quasi historical/mythological
document made by a bronze age people who were desperately
trying to understand a savage world were illness, death and
starvation were realities of their every waking moment.
apart from cultural value, historical intrigue it has no
real meaning for me. just as alchemy was superseded by
chemistry, astrology by astronomy, so has a believe in the
supernatural been supplanted by rational thought, as we have
the luxury of being able to consider stuff in the light of
empirical observation. If I lived back then id probably
just be as miffed as anyone else what lightning was, the
anger of a vengeful god no doubt.

as much as Dawkins can be a bit smug about his position I do
agree with him that its all culturally relative, just by the
fact you were born in western Europe precludes the fact that
you don't believe in the great juju up the mountain. You
don't believe in Thor or Zeus I imagine, so we all have
experience in being atheists, whats so unique about a pre
historic levant that makes people more susceptible in
believing in the story of Christ, for me its purely a
cultural phenomena rather than anything inherent in the
text, although I guess a lot of people like Jesus and his
parables. I think the old testament has a multitude of
precursor sources as well from ancient Mesopotamia and
Egypt, in fact its an amalgamation of older stories and
religions compiled to suit.

If God truly is the foundation of the order and being of the
cosmos, perhaps you can find that truth for yourself in the
light of God's reason and avoid Damnation.

So ask yourself, without God, how are science and reason
possible?

i know its a clumsy analogy but i think of it like this. The
origins of the universe are truly current unknowable and
strange without the added complexity of such an unprovable
idea such as a supreme being, being the catalyst of the
event. If i had a vacuum cleaner that exploded in an
unexplained manner because i didn't understand the mechanism
behind the event, it would be strange of me to say an Angel
was the cause. and therefore all vacuum cleaner failures are
caused by a super natural event, its faulty logic to my
mind.

I don't know maybe i am to much of a materialist, perhaps
there are things that go beyond logic and thought i really
don't know, the only think I do know is that organized
religion seems like an anachronistic practice that has been
used to brow beat everyone for the last 2000 years

yeah jokes aside and i know nobody is asking but it is not
healthy if your religion is negatively affecting your
psychology. au contraire the perk about religion is that you
believe some force is protecting you and your loved ones if
you live by the book and that's VERY powerful. that's the
only reason why i sometimes wish i believed in some god

the thing I worry about, if you have infinite intellect and
power and no one on the same level as you to keep you

quickly, or does god give himself selective amnesia to pass
