analogue super nt

It's a snes clone. "Squarepusher composed the audio to the
system's startup"

At the risk of being a pedant, it's not a SNES clone; it is
a SNES (or a Super Famicom, depending on how the FPGA is
told to behave).

I have one with a couple of 8BitDo wireless SNES pads under
my TV.

I was unaware Squarepusher wrote the intro sound. It's
nothing special; it could come from any contemporary
retro-styled indie game. The SNES' sound chip in general is
pretty underwhelming. It's basically a soundfont player and
the least interesting classic console to make music on.

here's the squarepusher ditty LAZY_TITLE

i would disagree about the snes sound chip being
underwhelming. there's something about how the chip
downsamples the audio that gives it this nice fuzzy unique
quality and it always sounds uniquely "snes-y" to me.
compare snes games to GBA ports of snes games and it's night
and day (admittedly, an unfair example and more just
demonstrates how garbage the GBA sound chip is).

i remember there was a koji kondo interview where he said
making music for snes was a nightmare, i imagine firstly cos
it required a level of tech know how knowing the sample
limits and number garbage bullshit that probably goes over
the head of most musicians, in terms of how to get the most
out of the chip. but there was also the issue of, it being a
sampler instantly meant the sound is dependent on what
samples you feed into it, compared to NES or Sega which had
a synth engine and pretty pre-defined set of limitations.
but despite all that, alot of snes games still sound
instantly recognizably "snes-y" to me in a way that's hard
to pinpoint why.

this video largely about writing a tracker for SNES
soundcard, goes into detail about how the downsampling gives
it the unique sound.

also back on topic. never got a super nt. wanted one but
never got one because of the concessions they made from the
Analogue NT to Super NT.

The dude who did the firmware for the NT released some
custom firmware on the side, which let you load games via
usb + also use the FPGA tech to play NES+Sega master
system+handful of other 8bit era consoles. i think with the
super nt, they put in more effort to dial that back a bit,
and it's alot more stricter on merely playing cartridges
that are inserted (which, with a flash cart cartridge is
hardly an issue i guess). but it still seems like a lot of
money for something can be achieved via pc emulation for a
lot cheaper!

still nice to have a dedicated box not doing anything in
background to distract from gaming, but the price tags on
those boxes ain't cheap!!

the snes soundchip is amazing
also calling fpga reconstruction 'cloning' is pretty fair

worst part of the analogue super nt: no analogue rgb out

“The SNES sound chip in general is pretty
underwhelming”

Uh, compared to what and when? For the time SNES games had
some of the best music out there.

I can see why ceri says the SNES chip is underwhelming from
a composition perspective, it's not like it has a lot of
character compared to the megadrive or SID for example.

Pigster, I think a lot of SNES games have a "snes-y" sound
due to the gaussian filter that's applied to everything and
the onbaord effects being used in loads of compositions.

Still not underwhelming or bad. I had both consoles growing
up and still to this day prefer what developers did with the
snes chip. Mega drive might have better stats but that does
iknno way make the snes chip bad. Fond memories of lots of
subtleties.

I agree, the SNES chip was great.

THheyre doing a Sega one next. As a Sega boy this is good
for me as I still have mega games. $190 though, yikes. And
mega drive emulation is pretty good.

They’ve already released a « mini » megadrive but via
another company. Has problems especially on the sound
department. Hope they do the next one themselves.

You can still get mega drives for 20 quid as they don't have
the ridiculous Nintendo retro fetishism markup attached to
them, not sure why you'd buy this other than for hdmi out?

Polygon article from today. They mention the sound chip.

yeah this is where i’m definitely drawing the line and
deciding this isn’t for me. check out the analogue NT
mini. you could load custom firmware onto that thing that
lets you play sega master system games. the guy who did the
fpga and firmware (kevtris) had even said he has a vision of
doing a big fpga box that handles all manner of systems as
far as they could push it. getting the custom firmware onto
the nt mini was a good indication of that. at this point
it’s feeling more like the company Analogue are using
those skills and being a bit opportunistic with it, opting
more for as many products as possible (milking it for what
it’s worth ! $$$) the original analogue nt was 450$ USD,
but they also need a 5k$ version made of gold?

i’m inclined to say, there’s good shit going on here
with how the fpga works and handles the “emulation”, or
whatever the correct word is, but the company kinda sucks
...

Nothing against Squarepusher, but I'm disappointed The
Manufacturer didn't commission a Japanese Composer to
compose the Startup Music for the Analogue Super Nt.
(Preferably a Female, Trans or Non-Binary Japanese Composer.
Jun Chikuma, the Composer for the Bomberman Series, would be
an excellent selection.) Paying a White Male to compose the
Startup Music for a Super Famicom (Or Super Nintendo
Entertainment System, as it is known to White Males) just
doesn't seem right.

Personally I don’t care what human category the composer
falls into and I quite like that start up jingle. Looped it
a few times.

And at the end of the day I prob won’t get this thing as I
have a mega drive. Would be smarter to get one of those
upscalers instead

At this price I think something like a MISTer FPGA makes
more sense, at least for me. Similar price and while it has
no cartridge slots or controller bundled is far more
versatile and can be rewritten with different cores etc. I
already use an everdrive, usb floppy emulator, SD card
reader etc so being able to put original media in isn't a
selling point, having a smaller box that can be flashed with
a dozen different systems is.

The analogue stuff does look lovely though.

I don't think You understand just how important
Representation is for Women, LGBTQ+ Folks and People Of
Color. White Males have been colonizing Female, Queer and
POC Spaces since Time Immemorial. Now we're trying to change
that.

People who say shit like this just have no fucking clue
about the extent of White Supremacy in America. Slavery, Jim
Crow, The Trail Of Tears, Project Wetback, The SS St. Louis,
Indian Residential Schools, Red Lining, The Ku Klux Klan,
Lynching, COINTELPRO, Police Brutality, Sundown Towns, The
Washington Football Team, The School-To-Prison Pipeline, The
Iraq War, The Afghanistan War, The Vietnam War... The list
goes on and on.
