i once saw a Japanese horror movie on uk tv.

the wizard zombie floated (or was on roller boots) and as
he tried to catch the normal people, he floated/glided
toward them, it was very horrific'ifying.

Onibaba, I love that one. That's in my TOP 10 Films of Ever.

And I really like Dark Water, watched it again a couple of
weeks ago.

Norwegian Wood bored me, but then I didn't like the book
that much either ( I'm all about 1Q84 and would like a film
of that)

I don’t have much knowledge in Japanese cinema, except the
obvious like Kurosawa. I do love a lot of anime, Ghibli like
freckles said, I love Akira, I remember it blowing my mind
when it came out.

I remember really enjoying Old Boy, but that’s South
Korean I think, and I thought Dumplings was great but it’s
Hong Kongese.

these i recommend from memory:
tampopo (cooking and slice of life)
woman in the dunes
(quite odd and kept me thinking about it,
really liked the imagery)
fish story (fun)

watched a few others this year,
from a top list of modern japanese cinema
100 yen
kabukichu love hotel

still on my list:
2046
Bakuman
Flying Colors
Have a song on your lips
Like someone in love
Maestro

japanese animation now that would be a whole other thread,
full of good bad and ugly.
never been a fan of the horror, but from the few i saw and
their trailers, there seem to be a whole lot of japanese
flicks out there that present quite different supernatural
stuff that makes one feel uneasy. much more subtle and
sometimes the sound alone can make your hairs stand up. in
short i feel i gotta give credit to its originality. the
surreal has more of that inescapabilty of a bad dream.

I love Japanese films - a fairly well-known director who is
different is Sion Sono: his newish film Tag is very
interesting, although Why Don't You Play in Hell? is
probably my fave of those I've seen.

I also love Kurosawa and the Zatoichi film series, plus old
yakuza films such as Branded to Kill, Tokyo Drifter, Youth
of the Beast, The Yakuza Papers series, etc.

Check out Suicide Club. Loads of schoolgirls preform a mass
suicide. It has supernatural elements, and well,
schoolgirls.

Based on what you've watched you should deffos watch swing
girls, Linda Linda Linda, himizu, love exposure (both by the
director of suicide club/tag) and all about lily chou chou
from my recommendations above umbro.

Do you read any manga?

Love exposure is about 4 hours long btw but it's sion Sonos
best film imo. It's about the transvestite 'god of upskirt
photography who sins to get attention from his priest father
taking on a cult.

Same director as Tag and Why Don't You Play in Hell.

"apart from youtube and soulseek

Best trackers would be passthepopcorn, karagarga and
avistaz, which is a tracker just for Asian film &
television.
