been enjoying eminem's discography atm
very personal style, from the heart, with copious amounts of
sick humour and grossout comedy

I like the recent Selena Gomez song, 'Bad Liar' — in parts
of it she genuinely sounds like P J Harvey, from the 'Dry'
era.

It's crazy, she's in her mid 20s and could easily be a
freshman in high school without anyone noticing an age
disparity

The backing track and vocal arrangement in Single Ladies by
Beyonce is actually fucking insanely good. Gets really
intense halfway through. The delay and harmonies are all
fucked up.

Another guilty pleasure is this one. Vocals are
very cliche but something about the whole thing works. Moody
one.

my subconscious/id/shadow really really REALLY enjoys
drinking in LA even though my conscious/super-ego/persona
considers that shameful and ridiculous

almost all parts of my self are fine with liking
joe le taxi, though. it just makes me feel like living in
a world of perverted psychopaths, that should be destroyed
rather sooner than later.

She has a few really good tracks, must be working with some
great producers and her voice isn't obnoxious.

LAZY_TITLE is one of the most "natural" mashups i've
ever heard, appropriate title or wot

These great producers what do they do in their free time?
How is there not one commercial great producer that has a
known solo project that we know and appreciate? I'm so
jelous of the outboard they use. But many known innovators
didn't have that gear. That's what made many of the early
90's electronic music that we enjoy.

A couple of them are famous in their own right, Prince is
the most notable example. Sia wrote a fair few hit singles
too before she became famous. I imagine the vast majority of
these people are middle aged men though and don't exactly
have the image to suit singing the songs for teenage girl
performers.

no i didn't mean commercial releases. someone who produces
commercial hits but also does what they enjoy in their own
time. there are electronic music mastering engineers that do
their own productions like tobias for example.

I'm sure there's loads but you don't hear about it because
they never talk about it. I don't think Joey Negro mentions
his Take That productions and Take That aren't likely to get
asked about it.

I just had a flick through the producers on the first
christina aguilera album and half of them have their own
bands etc with releases from before they go in to
production. Maybe producing commercial tracks is where
unsuccessful musicians transition to if they're lucky enough
to avoid getting a day job?

yeah could be. i don't think it's easy to produce commercial
tracks but i also don't think it's as hard as some claim it
to be.

I would imagine that it largely falls in to one of two main
areas. Emulating what is currently in fashion or trying to
predict what will be in fashion next. If you're entrenched
in the corporate Sony/Universal etc world you're probably
doing the former which definitely seems easier and you'll be
tackling things with money making for the label (and a
steady paycheck for you) in mind. Although if you're in that
world working with manufactured artists you've probably had
all of the decisions made for you by committee, who knows?
Would love to talk to someone in that position.

If you're doing the latter that's when you probably end up
using ghost producers and producers with more interest in
non-pop music. Like Dr. Dre or Diplo using ghost producers
who never get credited or Hudson Mohawke being plucked from
relative obscurity to produce Kanye and Drake because your
particular style is on the cusp of going mainstream.

any pop tracks that I've heard whilst out and about in the
past take on a speshul meaning when i hear them again after
a while... dunno if any one else gets it but they really
remind me of the time that they were first out. Like Cate
Nash was on earlier and instantly its 2008 again. So p much
any tracks like that are guilty (cos totally retrospective)
pleasure 4 me.
