Cinema-Theatre Question

Are there or have there been any movie theaters that play
obscure or older movies? Movie theaters that are unlike
Star, MJR, or whatever ones you have near you tha play
mainstream newer Hollywood films.

I want to open a theater for film junkies and potheads and
play random movies every week, it seems like a money maker
right?

i've thought about this before, there are loads of cult
movies and un-mainstream movies that never made it to the
big screen which i would love to see.

In the 70s there was something called 'Midnight movies'
nonmainstream movies were played to a cult film junkies at
midnight each weekend and they were repeated, this was a
sort of social interactive experience . it started in
newyork and expanded everywhere through the 70s

i think there is too much of a demand for holywood style
formulaic big budget movies for it to be a big hit these
days, but i would like it.

i think it's a shame that Clash of the Titans was cut in
order to give some actor/actress more relevance than another
and distort the story

it could only work if you manage to get people to support
the place. independant cinemas notoriously have a tough
time. speak to your local government about setting up a
cultural trust for the preservation of good and bad taste in
your local community.

where do you live so that you don't have a small
theatre nearby?
i'd reckon any bigger city has at least a handful?

i know of theaters around here that play older movies like
Some Like It Hot, and all that other stuff, i'm talking more
about asian film, western, sci-fi, comedy; the unknown films
that cater to moviegoers and not just the latest movie goers
who see clash of the titans, iron man 2 etc.

for instance newer movies which are released in other
countries such as Yip man 2, or others.

It seems like a really cool business to get into, but i've
gone the complete wrong direction, education wise to do
soemthing like that. i'd love to work for one though.

You might be able to start by holding large outdoor evening
parties with projected films. That way, people come for more
than just sitting, and you can start that general scene.
Make money with high cover, cheap drinks, free food.

Then after that, open an extremely small theatre attached to
the venue, with about 25 seats or so. That is daily, but
really people know the place from the Fri~Sun film parties.

yeah i was thinking of probably getting a prjoector and just
have parties while playing unique movies of a good calibur
for my art-friends, then if it grows any, try and get some
grants or something

We had the Schonell and two Dendy cinemas here showing
underground and independent movies... Of those three only
one Dendy remains. It would probably earn enough in a bigger
city than Bris but people are into boring shit here.
