username on steam is oscillik and i should be able to

After the abysmal demo (piece of trash wouldn't even let me
join a game) and the lackluster reviews (graphics 5.5/10 at
IGN? pitiful) I'm prepared to skip this game completely.
I've reinstalled AVP2 and have found that game to still be a
lot of fun. Let me know what you think about the new one
after you've played a few matches. Are the single player
campaigns good?

there are a few bugs with the game, and apart from the
matchmaking, the MP is good.

i enjoyed the SP, but i dunno how you'd respond to it

Well, I generally prefer a compelling single player campaign
to multiplayer "rinse-and-repeat" gameplay, but I do enjoy
MP sometimes. Have you played the original AVP games? Is the
SP portion of the game set up like AVP2 where there's a
campaign for each race and the story lines all sort of
coincide?

yeah i'm an avid fan of the originals (including the Jaguar
version) although i never really played MP on AvP '99 or
AvP2.

yeah the storylines do kinda crossover, the most
disappointing being the Alien storyline.
unfortunately it does borrow heavily from the AvP films i
believe. i haven't seen AvP-R but i did have the unfortunate
experience of seeing AvP.

at least Lance Henrikson is doing vocal acting.

and as far as the graphics, i think they're really good
actually. i'm running it in Dx10 mode

I just looked again on IGN and there is a PC-specific review
now which scores the graphics a decent 7.5. I might
eventually give this game a shot when the price falls. What
I'm really looking forward to is this. Gearbox
software at the helm + focus entirely on marines + coop
multiplayer = multiple orgasm.

i dunno why you're using reviews as a gauge of how good
graphics are...just look for yourself man. i really think it
looks great, and i wish i could play it in Dx11 - that shit
looks fucking awesome.

as for Colonial Marines - i really wanna play that too, but
there's rumour flying around that Sega might be ditching
it...i dunno. i hope it makes it, as it looks like an
interesting take on the whole L4D co-operative thing. and
there's no fucking predators involved!

Well, I trust IGN's reviews for the most part and I don't
want to pay full price on a game unless it scores
outstandingly across the board. As I said, I'll still
probably buy it eventually but I'm also not gauging the
game's potential purely on reviews. The shockingly bad
experience I had with the demo (not just being unable to
play, but the overly-simplified interface-for-morons
approach) really left me uncertain as to whether the game
was worth the dosh.

yeah, unfortunately it is quite obviously geared more
towards console n00bs :(

I always thought it was bullshit that Sega took on
publishing for both AVP and Colonial Marines. I was
particularly incensed by their decision to put Colonial
Marines on the back burner since I consider Gearbox to be
the more proven developer. If they scrap CM I will honestly
never buy another Sega product. That article I linked is
pretty old now but IGN has Colonial Marines as coming out
TBA 2010 so hopefully it's still quietly in the works. The
fact that it's based on the events that succeeded Aliens
(the film) alone makes it infinitely more cool. The AVP
films were abortions, failures both stylistically and
financially, and it saddens me to see a game whose storyline
could have been original in its own right pander to such
rubbish.

single player wise, the alien and pred missions were ok. the
marine campaign was the dullest, most generic piece of trash
ever.

as said, its almost impossible to get decent mp games going
with p2p/matchmaking, but once dedicated servers arrive,
it'll be quite fun i spose.

the game has so many glaring flaws that it really does kill
the mood for me. give me a good game of q3 or l4d1/2 anyday.

"the marine campaign was the dullest, most generic piece of
trash ever."

See, that's what I keep hearing and it's such a far cry from
the marine campaign of AVP2 which was bursting with
atmosphere, suspense, and exploration. You don't see a
single alien for the first two levels, for Pete's sake. I
wish they still made games with pacing like that.

Speaking of AVP2, it's annoying that this new game isn't
called AVP3 because that's what it is. Now we've got two
games called "AVP" which is just needlessly ambiguous.
