Steve jobs thinks it is "way better than a laptop, way
better than a phone. It's the best web experience you've
ever had."

Whatever.

Too big to fit in pocket. Not as useful as a laptop.
What is the purpose of this thing?
To browse internets on the sofa? Use a laptop.
To browse internets on the train? Use smartfone.
To browse internets in starbucks? BINGO.

The name is awful. Is it for ladies only? I like how Ipad
and Ipod are one letter apart. A letter than can only be a
vowel. That won't cause confusion and typos...
So come on fanboys, come and tell me how wrong I am, how
apple have created a must have gadget. Oh and someone tell
me wtf you're supposed to use it for.

the thing i want to know about it is whether you can tether
it to your laptop running ableton live and use the ipad for
launching clips like with a lemur, apc or launch pad. that
would be supremely cool.

i've made a simple control-thing on my iphone using touchosc
and osculator, but its a bit too small to really get into
it. that setup will work for anything that takes osc or or
midi, so you're all set to go. i'm getting one of these
just for that basically

plus porn on this should be decent

imo its for 'quick computing'

if im in bed, on the sofa, or wherever instead of having to
open the netbook i can just touch the screen.
it's much more inviting and easier.. everyday i check my
email in bed on the ipod touch and its great. and i do watch
movies sometimes on it, but with this i definitiely will.

its not really supposed to replace netbooks or smartphones,
its its own concept, and i guess its not for everyone, but
for those who like it love it.

If he's too lazy to "open a netbook", I doubt he will have
taken the effort to think before typing. I guess that's
"quick computing" for you.

i am in total agreement here.

it uses a proprietary operating system that still doesn't
let you multitask
, it uses a stupid SIM card that isn't
used anywhere else other than with AT&T by the look of it.

as far as i can see, the only people that this will cater to
is Apple fanboys (and i used to be one). and most Apple
fanboys have either:

a MacBook, in which case they could get the same use out of
an iPhone

or

an iPhone, in which case if they get the iPad one of the
devices is made redundant almost completely.

offline cx from Norway on 2010-01-27 14:27 [#02362514]

why the harsh comments?
i think it looks pretty cool. it doesnt have the complete
freedom of the netbook, nor the portability of a smartphone,
so its sort of a lifestyle device.
you do it for the experience and the progression.

im not exactly sure how portable this is, but i know i use
my ipod touch all the time, and the thing that ipad can take
over is videos, games, and web browsing.
oh and now it takes over the kindle as well.
if it feels right to take it out with me and use it as a
portable audio player then i dont see how this isnt all
winner.
if not, i use it at home and when on longer trips, and use
my ipod to the store.

actually, e-book readers (including kindle) use a different
screen technology without backlighting so they don't strain
your eyes.

by the looks of it this ipad still has some form of lcd
screen.

I don't understand this "quick computing" bullshit. "Less
clicks" and "faster startup" are touted as features on
Windows 7 - But I'm on Windows XP, the only time I've been
laboured by too many mouseclicks is through websites and not
through the interface of the OS.

Are hipsters today too weak to click their way through 3
pages?

Hipsters cant be bothered with waiting for start up times
and physically interacting with tactile buttons. Their
energy and time is better spent discussing Animal
Collective, Lomo Cameras and the art of properly adding
patina to vintage running shoes. The iPad is right up there
alley.

I just meant a touch screen is faster and feels better than
a keyboard + mousepad.
I know this from my usage of the iPod.

In the morning I just slide the slider across and click the
email button.

On a netbook or laptop I have to open the case, wait for the
screen to load, use the mousepad to browse to the icon for
email client, or login to webmail.. I'm not saying this is
too hard to do, I'm just saying a touch screen is a
different experience.

Plus, you all are ignoring how awesome and minority report
like the whole thing is. Welcome to the future..

I guess this is what it comes down to.
You just hate on a specific type of personality stereotype,
not the actual product.

I'm as far away from 'hipster' as one can come, I still
think the iPad/ipod/iphone are awesome.
I don't care if apple made it or someone else, so I'm not an
apple fanboy, I just love the futurism of the technology and
the practical applications. But yeah I won't deny that there
is a certain coolness factor to it and this also counts to
me.
