There was a programme on featuring James May of Top Gear fame in which he gets a team together to build a two-storey Lego house.

I had seen that before but somehow forgotten about it. That's pretty much the greatest thing ever.
Hed: yeah, I had the feeling it might be old but I had never seen it before a few days ago.

Do you know if he or anyone else is planning on living in that? I wonder what special steps, if any, would be required to make it inhabitable in the long term. It brings up a whole slew of interesting (imo) questions. How well can legos insulate on their own? Would bits of insulating material have to be stuffed into each brick as they are laid? What are the acoustic properties of a home made almost entirely of legos? How tight are the seams between each lego brick, and would the roof, for example, withstand inclement weather? Why are there little gaps in the walls of the house? Are there to be windows of clear lego plastic, glass, or none at all? Will the floor be made of legos as well, and if so, will it be capped with flat "finishing tiles" as Lego calls them, or would the little connector nubs remain exposed? Would there be groundwork for power and plumbing? The list goes on but I've already badgered you enough.

They took it down. They tried to sell it to Legoland Windsor but it would have taken £50,000 to disassemble and rebuild it. And the vineyard it was placed in needed the space for more vines, and there was no planning permission.

If you can access the show on the iPlayer, it addresses a lot of those questions.

Ah, well. The seams were as tight as possible, but there was still some gaps which transferred into large cracks through the side of the building. The gaps in the side of the house were actually clear bricks, for light. There was at least one large window that is made of clear Lego bricks. The floor wasn't finished with flat "finishing tiles," the nubs were exposed. They found out that lego wasn't very watertight, they managed to have some electric lights in the house, though.

Say no more. I suppose it was a pipe dream but I think it's neat that they tried. Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions.

The house was completed, and it looked pretty nice. James May himself stayed in the house for a night on a lego bed and said he had "best night's sleep for a long time." LAZY_TITLE

Did he cheat and use blankets and pillows or was he full-on roughing it? :D

I wouldn't blame him. If I slept on a lego pillow I'd go mad.
