who's good at maths then?

I took math through precalculus at my normal high school,
and studied engineering (a lot of physics, trig, algebra,
etc.) at a votech school for half my day my junior and
senior year.

I initially thought about going to school for computer
engineering before deciding on music composition.

would you reccomend some book that explains in
understandable ways the use of mathematics in music pls?

You're thinking of Hecker? Ponder if you really want to read
that kind of math.

;-)

Not about music composition, but more signal processing,
however I think this book is interesting:

A DSP primer : with applications to digital audio and
computer music / Ken Steiglitz. ISBN / ISSN 0805316841

I read it when learning about digital signal processing as
part of my electronics degree. I found it less theoretical
than some other books because he talks about things like
tuning forks as sinusoidal sources, etc I can't remember all
of the contents, but I think there is quite a bit of
convolutional reverb, filtering, pitch shifting, etc.

Also have a look at this:

http://www.musimathics.com/

i have read something about signal processing some years
ago, i did a local sound engineering course but wasn't
catching for me cos i found it too cold, too 'job' for my
tastes but perhaps those few notions will come in handy
somehow. thanks for that link, the descriptions intrigue me,
i'll have a closer look with the hope that english language
+ technical stuff doesn't turn it into hieroglyphics.
eventually i'll look for that kind of stuff in italian
language.

if you want to know about signal processing you're going to
want to be comfortable with trig functions and sigma
notation. most stuff up through single variable calc.
information theory, electrical engineering too. set theory
& number theory concepts going to help you out in learning
other areas of math.

ima bad at maths but tryin'....

today i learned that you can represent any possible western
scale as number between 2048 and 4095 in binary,
i.e. bog standard major = 2773 = 101011010101
etc...

now when you take this scale
101011010101 and binary compare it with another, i.e.:
110011001011 (3275) the result is notes which are shared by
both scales:
100011000001

it blew my mind a little.
