bah, too difficult

you will have to find out what you like by listening to
different things...

Bach is always good. Mozart is jolly. Beethoven = lovable
emo.

I personally like Edvard Grieg a lot, and Igor Stravinsky.

Of the more contemporary composers, I would single out the
minimalists (Terry Riley, Philip Glass, Steve Reich...) and
some of the modernist composers, like Luigi Nono and
Karlheinz Stockhausen. Whether that falls under the category
of what you'd call "classical" I don't know, but strictly
speaking classical is only a period in history predating
Romanticism. It's easier to classify things based on the
instruments used, like "piano music" or "orchestral music".

Bach's Mass in B Minor performed by period instruments and a
small group of singers.

Domenico Scarlatti's sonatas for harpsichord.
If youre a fan of the harpsichord listen to the those
versions, if you prefer the piano-forte find a version
performed on a modern piano. Theyre both great.

start with the early stuff. forget the gregorian, go
straight to the renaissance choral music. try these on for
size.

otherwise classical music becomes too complex and personal,
but start with bach and dig until you find something you
like. these are all opinions that are issued without
warranty. but trust me, check these:

Miserere
Composed by Gregorio Allegri

Spem in Alium (also set as "Sing and glorify"), motet for 40
voices
Composed by Thomas Tallis

Osculetur me osculo, motet for 8 voices, M. xix (S. xxi/9)
Composed by Orlande de Lassus

Salve regina mater, motet for 6 voices, M. xiii (S.
xiii/125)
Composed by Orlande de Lassus

Work(s) [Unspecified] Ave Maria
Composed by Josquin Desprez

Dum transisset sabbatum (i), motet for 5 (another version
exists for 4) voices
Composed by John Taverner

Magnificat
Composed by Manuel Cardoso

Schubert Sonatas sucker! I let him touch the ol' piano from
time to time. Dark and featherlight.

Balinese gamelan is also quite the shit, in an Eastern sort
of way. I'd have to recommend the recordings by unknown!

Personally I can't listen to anything before late Romantic..
Before that all the harmonies and tones are just too
standard.. I like the more newer modern compositions..

Some of my favorites are Wagner, Debussy, Grieg,
Stravinsky..

since i give quite every kind of music a chance i borrowed
a best of classic 5 cd set from a friend. i hated 99%.
most of it was this "aristocratic celebratory" supposed to
be joy-and playfulness that just makes me want to kill!

still i had a lot of fun doing
http://www.sendspace.com/file/cbjw1c" target=_blank>this ... track here
i seriously like it although the sound doesnt match a real
orchestra. have fun!
