I keep hearing good things about it. I might actually get
round to seeing it at some point.

It's ok. I love the surreal segments and the first half is
brilliant, but when the whole metamorphosis thing kicks in,
things get a little silly. Brilliant special effects for the
time though.

it's really interesting but the 15 minute monkey bit is
really cringeworthy. Check out brainstorm if you liked
altered states.

i liked the premise of the movie but parts of it are really
dated to me now. it got me interested in finding more out
about Lily and eventually trying my own isolation tank
experience which was pretty amazing. I recommend anyone who
has any interest in psychedelic meditative or dream like
experience to try it.

Do you like Robert Anton Wilson et al?

For guys who like lilly, wilson, mckenna - hell, even
castaneda - this film is quite interesting, but it joins the
dubious rank of Communion and Close Encounters for making
its subject matter appear ridiculous by way of dramatic
license. Still, I would recommend it.

i will pick up the torch, but i need a better psychedelic
drug supply to do it properly. where can i buy 'research
chemicals' online now adays? japan?

marlowe: re: Robert Anton Wilson i actually havent checked
out any of his stuff, and the reason being i was told to
avoid it because i had a stint in a mental hospital once and
when i described my experience to people at least 2 of them
said 'wow that sounds exactly like the illuminatis trilogy'
and because of that i have been scared to read it in fear of
having some kind of psychological relapse

This is one of my favorite films. My dad had me hooked on in
since I was 5, way before I could even understand what was
going on.

Awhile ago I made a music video to it. clicky

i like how in the movie its an unspecified drug. they imply
thew brew might be partially amanita muscaria, but nothing
is confirmed.

someone needs to make an actual biopic about john lily's
life. altered states is very loosely based on him. but the
actual man had a very interesting life, was one of the first
people to try and study dolphin human communication. He
started trying to communicate with dolphins while in an
isolation tank thinking this would put him on a more equal
state with them. At the time he was also experimenting with
psychedelics in conjunction with these studies, sometimes
simoltaneously (tank + lsd + trying to talk to dolphins).
It's hard to tell at one point he went off the deep end,
because even his early work is very far out. later in his
life he became interested in Ketamine and became a full
blown addict, rarely interviewed or seen in public life
while not being nder the influence of it. he had a lot of
celeb friends and even once addressed the United Nations

On this day in 1943 – Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann
discovered the psychedelic effects of the semi-synthetic
drug LSD.

yea, it's a fine line between ill-umination and mental
ill-ness.

the current state of psychology and psychiatry is very
crude, the same as it is with dentistry, that's why
experiences with both can be humiliating and painful but
still, at best, helpful.

actually cosmic trigger could be a better, saner way to
start reading Wilson, since it's non-fiction and
autobiographical.

marlowe: Hofmann, incidentally, is 102 and living well.

I love his Cosmis Trigger books... you don't really need to
read the Illuminatus! Trilogy or the Schrodinger's Cat
Trilogy.

I didn't know Hofmann as still alive.. pretty cool :]
